With more and more players using 7 string guitars these days I was wondering if Fender has considered making a 7 string. The Strat is my fav. guitar and I think a 7 string Strat would be awesome.

I'd probably never own one but it would be pretty cool. Fender did start putting humbuckers in stock guitars after a while so maybe it could happen if enough people were interested.

Fender also put Floyd Rose double-locking tremolo systems on the Fender Strat for a bit during the 80's but now it is impossible to find a Fender Stratocaster since with anything but the current no-locking system.

A 7-string wouldn't look stupid - a 7-string guitar just introduces a baritone-B into the equation. There are 5 and 6 string basses out there. And I've seen worse when it comes to guitars. Check out Steve Vai's three-neck Ibanez JEM for ridiculousness - hey, but he plays the darn thing. ;) Or Jimmy Page's two-neck Gibson SG. Plenty of room for variety.

I say leave the Fender line alone. Fender owns Jackson and they make 7 string guitars if you want one.

I'm not sure if Charvel makes a 7 string or not. I can't find anything yet that says they do.

In the late '80s Fender *almost* had a 7 string strat: the Alex Gregory Signature model. Fender would have been at the start of the 7 string guitar craze. It's not clear why it never went into production, but there were a few prototypes made:

http://www.strat-central.com/c1.htm

The salmon colored one was in the Duchossoir Strat book (1988 edition, IIRC). In 1991, I inquired about getting one and the local dealer was told that they would not make an Alex Gregory.

Do a Google on the "Maestro Alex Gregory" if you want to read about an interesting character.

The new (July 2008 ) Guitar World has a brief mention of Alex Gregory (in a "Where are they now?" sidebar for a "50 Fastest Guitarists of All Time" article).

It says "he sued Ibanez over the seven-string guitar (he patented and developed a seven-string strat with Fender in 1987, three years before the Ibanez Universe hit the market), took the title `Maestro' ... "

Well I wouldn't like to change the classic design. To me it would just look dumb. Can't help it. I don't like humbuckers on strats, I wouldn't like the 7th string.

Okay, I see your point. If Fender were to make a 7-string guitar then they'd have to stop making 6-string guitars altogether. And you'd have to use them! ;)

Variety is the spicy beef of life.
