I'm ignoring everyone elses stuff and just putting my opinion for the OP. I leave my backplate on I don't feel it does anything to hurt the sound and I feel like the guitar is naked and looks wrong without it. If you really are worried about the holes and just want the back plate off why not get soft cloth or rubber pieces for the screws and put them back in the holes and leaving the plate off? I know wood swells and shrinks with temperature so I can imagine the holes would too without the screws in them. Also you don't want moisture getting in those.
