OP - what is the subject line anyhow. "how to protect the exposed screw holes."

As for the increase in resonance with one extra spring? I have my doubts. By removing the cover you can hear the reverberation of the springs better. That is your increase in volume you hear, not really resonance.

reverb as well as resonance through the springs is a figment of the imagination. If you look at an amps reverb. The spring is next to nothing in the circuit. Just a path to separate signal. All the sound and effect goes on in the recovery stage. As for resonance, well by current guitar mythology thinking, having a moving area not made from either brass or super duper, smelted on Jupiter steel will kill resonance.

Silly to want to take a few minutes to prevent unnecessary damage to a guitar I'm going to have for the rest of my life?

It's not quite as silly as taking the time to lecturing someone on appropriate back plate use in various scenarios when the question was how to protect the finish while avoiding chemical reactions over the long term.

If you're worried about chemical reactions, you need to heavily invest in a clean room, a lifetime supply of gloves and some sort of face mask.

As if the screw holes are going to be subjected to compounds that will cause chemical reactions that wouldn't affect the rest of the guitar.

Absolutely hilarious.

B+ on your troll.

You know when you take your trem cover off, the paint is like pristine compared to the rest of your guitar, if you've actually put any considerable amount of time into it. Is that what you're trying to preserve?

Gee whiz, you guys are so mean! I was gonna take my string trees off my favorite Strat 'cause I know it will give the guitar a lot more resonance, but I'm worried about stuff falling into those screw holes or maybe scratching myself when I change strings once a year...

I'm thinking about applying a piece of Scotch tape over those holes... is this a good solution..?

TIA

Duck tape would be better.

Actually, everyone knows you're supposed to fill the screwholes full up with duct tape. It adds resonance.

"If I keep the plate off I'm concerned the rough screw holes could catch on my clothes and eventually start rubbing away paint, so I want to cover them up."

Evidently not a "reliced" fan. Good for you.

"If I cover them with electrical or painter's tape, can it react with the finish long term?"

Possibly. Which Strat do you have. Older Strats have a different finish than newer ones.

"Can I fill them in with small rubber hole plugs and not have to worry about any reaction between the materials?"

Yes you can fill the holes with plugs. There maybe a reaction between the materials. I would think not. How are you going to remove the plugs once you want to put the plate back on?

"Or should I just buy a cheap back plate, dremel out the center, and put that on the guitar?"

Possible the best solution.

Okay, I'm a fairly new guy here too, but it looks a little to me like your first interaction with the folks here hasn't gone so well. Can't think why.

I was going to try to answer your question, but I'm afraid I can't do better than any of the others have already done. You'll get a bit of wear on the back of your guitar whether or not the back plate is on or off, try not to worry too much about it and just enjoy playing it.

That would be the late Rodney Dangerfield. Class comedian. I highly recommend his films 'Back To School' and 'Caddyshack'.

That's the way of it at times. Regrettably, it may put a valuable contributor off where we are concerned. :? You have my two cents. Now I'm waiting for the change.
