Hello, everything is in the title, but it seems to me that at the time, it was the paper oil.
If anyone knows the value?

They varied a bit, as they tended to just put in whatever was closest in the bin at the time.

0.1uf is generally considered the correct 'vintage' value, but some 0.047uf and 0.022uf caps can be found here and there.

I've grown quite fond of Mojotone's metal-sleeve PIO "Vitamin Q" tone cap with a value of .022ufd. The transitional sweep between treble and bass frequencies seems smoother and it doesn't seem to attenuate the guitar's overall volume when the tone control is rolled back to zero.

Agreed, I find the 0.1uf to be a bit too 'woofy' at times, so most of my Strats end up with 0.022uf. I find it a nice, smooth value which really encourages you to use the tone control more.

Of course my number one is just weird, as it has both a 0.1uf and a rather tiny 0.0047uf on a rotary switch in place of the second tone knob which can also bypass the tone control entirely.

The rated value of the cap is different than the actual read out. Lots of inconsistencies back then, so it's hard to tell, try a few and see what works best.

I'm a fan of the Vitamin Q's too. I've got a .047 in mine. You probably know this but the higher the value the more treble is rolled off in the basic tone.

Funny that I see this post tonight as I've spent the last two days trying a variety of capacitors in 2 of my strats, my modded 94 mim and my 2002 American std. I got a bunch of nos caps from my dad that he bought back in the 70s and 80s at the Rockwell Collins Radio surplus store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I tried 20+ caps at values of .01uf, .022uf, .033uf, .047uf, .1uf, .15uf, and .22uf. Values from .01-.1uf are best for strat single coil pups. Values go as .01uf= less bass and mud when tone is rolled back, bright and sparkly when rolled up, to .1uf+= dark, bass, and sometimes muddy when when tone is rolled back thick, rich, and woody when rolled up. Now to answer your question about what cap is in a 57 strat.

Typically a real 50's strat will have a paper and beeswax .1uf capacitor like this late 50s repo. It gets a little dark when dialed all the way back but sounds killer for the first 3/4ths of the tone pot. This is the set up in my 2002 mim 60s, the pickups are custom hand scatter wound to 1959 specs.

These are the best sound capacitors that I've found so far in my testing. The paper in oil are very dynamic and have great tone. The Sprague Orange drops are very lively and rich, again very good tone, a bit cleaner with more bite than the paper in oil which are thicker and richer sounding. With poly caps it really depends on what brand/make, some sound amazing some sound thin and weak. None of the old ceramic disc caps I had sounded good but I don't have any good quality nos ceramic discs. I'm not 100% sure what the bottom few caps are (the bumble bee looking and the one with the colored dots), my dad thinks they may be ceramic. They are .022 and .033 and sound amazing, as good as my best orange drops and paper in oil, they sound so good that I put a dotted one in my American std.

One last bit. I found and old 60s made in Japan poly capacitor that sounded as good if not better than any of the other caps I've tried over the last 2 days. It's a .1uf at 100volts. I put it in my 94 mim heavily modded maple neck/fretboard strat. It has a custom shop fat 50s pup in the neck and killer MIJ 57/62 pups in the middle and bridge, USA lefty vintage style bridge, USA cts pots and oak 5 way switch, USA vintage tuners, and a slip stone nut.

Thank you for your valuable advice, I'll try 2 or 3 capacitors that has and will tell you the results.
great
