I currently replaced the pickups on my 64 reissue strat with texas special pickups. I set everything up only to find out that the neck position produced a very feint sound. When I say this, I had to turn my amp up to 8-9 to get a feint sound(nothing that could play with drums), and if I switched to the middle position it was ear splitting loud. I proceeded to disconnect the pickup and test the continuity and resistance. I got a reading and I also tested the pickup separately to the amp by touching the hot and ground cables to the guitar cord tip. I am not sure what to do next rather than take it to a shop. If anyone has had a similar problem just let me know. Any help would be much appreciated.

check your connections to the selector and the pot. Also check the pickup with a multimeter. The fine wire from the pickup windings to the leads is very easily broken as well. Were these pickups new or used?

These pickups are more fragile than I thought! I had the middle pickup go bad on the Custom Shop Strat I purchased in March. :( It simply went out, no sound at all, and I never had the guitar out of the house, never dropped, bumped, etc. I had the pickup replaced at the local Fender authorized shop (it took a while because the pickups are Texas Specials but with a custom wind specified by the dealer) and I commented that it seemed strange that a new pickup would be damaged after such little use. The shop owner said that it happens more often than most people realize. He pointed out that the wire is so fine that they are easily damaged on installation only to fail later.

It's amazing that some of these vintage guitars that have been treated roughly don't have more problems than they do!

The pickups are new. I have checked them with a multimeter and got a reading. The pickups that were in place before worked fine. I just followed the same connections when replacing the old pickups.

Cold solder joint perhaps?

I agree what was the reading? It should be around 6.5 kohms.
If it is dud it will either measure really hi or open or less likely very low and shorted.
Did you get a good sound when you connected it to the guitar plug? You can tap on the poles with a screw driver and should be able to hear a thud.
If the above all are correct check your soldering to and from the switch and the switch itself.
You could also measure the resistance from the base of the pickup right thru to the volume control to see that your connections are ok. :D
