I don't think Fender ever releases actual production numbers on guitars unless they are specially numbered runs (you'll see things like "#1 of 100" or something similar).

Almost every production line built Fender made in 2006 got that little "60th Anniversary of Fender" medallion with the diamond-like chip; the only ones I'm not sure about are the American Vintage Reissue series instruments.

That being said, I would tend to agree with the approixmate number of "a few thousand"; Fender just doesn't make that many lefty guitars in any given year.
