Hello, I've got a Fender Stratocaster and I'm wondering if I scallop my guitar neck, will I regret it later? I'm a big fan of Yngwie Malmsteen. And many people have said that after they tried a scalloped guitar, They would never go back to a normal neck, I like to play speed stuff. And I dont wanna change to Ibanez or Jackson guitars or anything like that. So my question is, Should i scallop my guitar neck?

I would try one with a scalloped neck before you modify yours.

I personally wouldn't have one. The only time I'll ever have a scalloped neck is when my regular fretboard wears out so much that it's scalloped, then I'd be use to it.

There's one thing you might want to keep in mind about a scalloped neck. Since a scalloped neck is obviously deeper cut than a regular neck, you'll have a tendency to overly bend the string downward when your fretting a string, which makes the notes your trying to play harder to keep in tune, for the simple reason your touch has to be dead on for you to be able to nail the right note.

If you've never tried a scalloped neck, you should try to find one somewhere to mess around on to see what you think about it.

If your really serious about it, I would strongly suggest that you buy a seperate scalloped neck for your guitar. Then if for some reason you don't like it, you can take it off and put your old neck back on. You should be able to sell a scalloped fender neck with no problem.

You can buy one from Warmoth, they also have alittle word on scalloped necks, you can pick any Fender neck possible and for an extra charge they will scallop the neck.

Good luck, remeber, choose wisely.

First and formost, if you think you my want to try a scalloped fretboard, don't modify the factory original neck. It would be better to purchase a after market neck that is already scalloped.
Also consider the type of scalloping that you would like; progressive like what Ritchie Blackmore uses - allowing easy chording on the bottom strings and deeper on the high strings for bending. Or a standard, full scallop like Yngwie Malmsteen uses.
Scalloping opens up areas of expression that are normally limted to players of fretless stringed instruments. While a more relaxed way of playing, it requires one really pay attention to accurate fingering pressure-wise.

only do so if you have the financial ability & technical support like Malmsteen, once you start, you will find it difficult to turn back.
