So, I stopped by one of my local consignment shops. Something catches my eye. Yeah, it's horribly overpriced. I pick it up anyway and start to strum it. Oh man. As if the blank ebony board wasn't calling my name... the matching headstock screamed at me too. I tried to negotiate, they wouldn't have any of it. So I leave with it anyway. This thing plays and it sounds great. I'll be fully blacking the guitar out, tuners, screws, knobs, bridge...

Anyone know, what brand locking tuners these things have? Just curious.

**dribble**

that thing looks the mutts nuts!

Can I make a polite request? I like this forum very much but will have to stay away if folk keep posting pictures of sweet looking blackouts. I just made the mistake of looking at some of Xhefri's build threads. That didn't help and I now have really bad GAS.

Please desist.

That's ridiculous - in the best way possible

The tuners look like chrome versions of the Schallers used on my Jeff Beck

If I'm remebering correctly that was an FSR American Deluxe Strat from that year (probably circa 2004-2005); nice find! I believe the HSS was available in black or blue, and the SSS was available in black or red. Does it have a "50th Anniversary of the Stratocaster" logo on the neck plate?

The tuners are the Fender/Schaller locking tuners on those; unfortunately they don't make them in black chrome (probably one of the reasons why the guitar didn't have black chrome from the factory).

You could probably get Sperzels in black for it, but you would have to drill an extra hole for the guide pin on the tuner body (Fender/Schallers have 2 guide pins, Sperzels have only 1 guide pin and it would fall in the middle of the 2 holes for the Fender/Schaller tuners). The other styles of locking Schallers are available in black chrome but they have different mounting as well (and some styles have retaining screws on the back of the headstock insted of guide pins); I believe only the Sperzel tuner will cover the existing holes.

Hey everyone, thanks!

Yeah, they're locking Schallers, I've found out.

So these Schallers are different than the other standard locking Schallers on the market? I have seen them in black. I don't want black chrome, just standard black.

I dunno what to do with the bridge. The only compatible black bridge that I'm aware of is the Hipshot. I do have an extra Gotoh Floyd, but I dunno if I should molest this guitar or not...

John C, yeah it's a FSR Deluxe, it's the "None More Black", not a 50th anniversary. It has a chrome Fender, Corona California neck plate with the angled pocket and microadjust. I assume that's standard Deluxe features.

Sounds like pretty much the standard American Deluxe features; I just couldn't remember if these were from 2004 or a later year so I asked about the neck plate - definitely not 2004 then.

Sorry; I've been calling plain black parts "black chrome" for over 30 years now because that's what places like Schecter called them back in the day; I guess these days they really do have those dark grey-black chrome parts that are truely "black chrome". At any rate, yes, the Fender/Schallers are slightly different than the other Schallers you can buy - the Fender/Schallers have that rectangular body where the other types of Schaller have that rounded body - as I say I'm not sure if these would cover up the markings left by the rectangular Fender/Schallers. You can get them with a guide pin but these have a single pin instead of the Fender/Schaller's double pin. Unfortunately any way you cut it there isn't a black 100% drop-in replacement for the Fender/Schaller tuners.

Sorry for the huge pictures, but here is the standard Schaller with the single pin:

And here are the Fender/Schallers:

The None More Black which is an HSS Strat, was only available in Black.

The SSS guitar you're talking about is called Bad Boy Blue. It was available in Cobalt Blue Transparent and featured a premium ash body.

Aha - and per your photo the Bad Boy Blue was the SSS model. I guess the memory is going on these FSR models; while I remembered them being available at about the same time I was thinking that the "Bad Boy Blue" also was HSS and had the black painted headstock.

Someone really should put together a database for these FSR models; there are a lot of cool things out there that Fender has done over the years that several years after the fact would come off as a modded guitar instead of a factory guitar.

Hey John, thanks for the info. Looks like I need to have my machinist see if there's room for modifications... which really sucks.

And that Bad Boy Blue looks pretty wicked too. Might have to keep my eye open for one of those...

They also did Deluxe Vintage Player Stratocasters and Telecasters which were a nice mixture of vintage and modern features...
