My dad recently gave me one of his old bass guitars but I have no idea what kind of guitar it is or what year it is. Image

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's a Fender Precision Bass. Serial# - assuming they follow the same rules as Stratocasters, indicates Made is Mexico around 2002.

You might get better responses in the P Bass subforum viewforum.php?f=9

Yes - the correct title is Standard Precision Bass, from 2002. Yours is in 3-tone sunburst. My uneducated eye would guess that it's been sitting for quite some. Bring it in to a store for a set-up where they'll intonate, check neck relief and string height.. and perhaps give the fingerboard a quick cleaning. Most important is that they'll put on new strings. It'll be around $50 + cost of strings depending where you go.

If you'd rather not pay to have her set up, you can try teaching yourself how to do it, but at least buy it a new set of strings.

Or you could buy new strings, a roll of paper towels, a bottle of lemon oil and grab an old toothbrush and take 10 minutes to clean it up before restringing it and play it to see if it even needs to be set-up. It's really not that difficult. lol
