I just brought an orange micro terror and matching cab. It's tiny, bedroom sized, it's a valve head and it Sounds incredible. Should have been about 150 gbp for both. I would recommend it to anybody as a practice amp. If I was gigging I'd even be tempted to leave my big fender at home and mic up the orange.

Musiciansfriend.com has the SRV Stratocaster brand-new for $1,599 USD. Not much more than the one you linked to from e-bay and for that little extra, you get a brand new instrument with warranty and no questions about authenticity or condition.

https://www.chicagomusicexchange.com/

they sell them for 1499$ AND ship directly to switzerland (for a hefty 300$'s though)

Buy the SRV, if thats the guitar that you want.

Otherwise you will regret whatever you do buy, true enough, there are a million and one guitars out there that will do the job as well or even better, but they are not what you have set your heart on.

If you get the chance to buy a good used example, so much the better, that way not only do you save money, but you also don't have to worry about depreciation

Go with your heart !!

If its any help, I have recently purchased a SRV Strat, and I find although it looks and sounds amazing, the size of the neck is quite cumbersome, very much like my '78 Telecaster.

Here's a pic of mine....

I feel like I wasted a lot of money by "easing into" guitar playing, buying at my level of ability. I passed on a new Clapton for $940 because I was not worthy. So my opinion now is buy the best you can afford. If it doesn't work out, the best is easy to resell. Have fun! :D

I hope anyone can help me with this... And then there is the question about the amp, i got a pretty standard 40w Laney Amp which is just not up for the job. I don't need anything loud, just quality would be good so i can practice at home without having to ramp it up to 7 before the amp starts to work proper. What works good with the SRV (if it would be that one) ?

tl;dr: HELP!

The Laneys are fairly good amps, very popular. So far as ramping it up to 7, realize that most amps don't come into their own at lower volume levels. Most of the Electrics/Electronics need at least 50% power to work properly.

The workaround is to push the amp to say 1/2-3/4 level, then use the Guitar's Volume Control and the Gain to limit the noise coming out the front end to a confortable level.

cheers!

The SRVs are great guitars , but they are not for everyone.Chunky necks with a fairly flat fretboard radius (12"). The frets are tall and skinny, so if you play with a death grip on the neck, it will feel like a railroad track. The key to these necks are a low action with a lighter touch while sliding across the necks.I have mine from 06 and its still a great guitar to have.I have fairly small hands and love the bigger necks.Good luck, and dont play junk just because you are a noob , find the nicest guitar you can comfortably afford.

this is why the Orange amp i suggested is so good. its only 20W so doing the work at fairly low volumes.

I just ordered and tried the SRV thanks to your guys feedback. Just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate it, you've made this decision much easier and clearer for me.

Thank you SO SO much to you all!

Pictures will follow once i've made my decision, the next thing to tackle is the amp.

That first part is exactly why I recommended Greta or Excelsior. Low watt tube amps like those give good sounds at home volume levels - same with Vox's 4Watters etc.
And usually I don't get the sound I like with that 'amp vol low' - 'guitar vol low' - 'gain low' combination.
Actually, I've been gathering the courage to build a low watt tube amp (0.5W - 1W) for some time now, shall see if it ever happens...

Used SRV Strat and a Fender Bassman Reissue, toss in an Ibanez Tube Screamer and you have the SRV setup...

I have an SRV strat from 1994. I love it. The neck, the tone, everything.
The best set up I have found is to lower the pickups as far as the can go and have the action not so low. Also I put a .001 capacitor across the volume pot. This keeps the highs from being bled off when you lower the volume. A great and easy mod.You want to "earn" your tone when play it. I have it strung with 11s but have played it with 10s as well. All good.
Hope you dig it and enjoy!!!!
