I've pulled the trigger on another strat to add to my fender collection, but due to my weakness/sickness, I'm already researching my next fender purchase.

I'm thinking that I would like to get something completely different than the classic variation of fender tones I'm getting on my standards.

I'm eyeing up the pawn shop '72, but is there anything that anyone has heard from their current lineup that is not conventionally fender sounding? Perhaps leaning toward the, dare I say, gibson tones?

Couple different options... Look for something with humbuckers. That's really different. Perhaps something with the TBX or S-1 System?

In the Pawn Shop price range, it's a toss-up between the Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster Special and the Fender Blacktop Stratocaster HSH.

Since YOU mentioned Gibson, there's no model from Fender that's closer to a Gibson than the Jim Adkins Signature JA90 Telecaster. Everyone that hears me play it loves it. Everyone that plays it loves it even more.
It has: P90's, 24.75" scale length, set neck, tune-o-matic bridge. The P90's are real hot, 11.5k neck, 14.5k bridge, but it has a real full sound. It's pretty inexpensive also.

I can confirm that the scale length is 24.75". I"ve measured it. As you know there's a lot of spec misinformation on the internet.

If you want something close to Gibson tone Gibson does that very good. Ive never heard a Fender with a Gibson tone.

Prior to the JA90 Fender did a Telecaster Junior and a Telesonic in the 1990s.

The Tele Junior sported a pair of P90s and the Telesonic twin DeArmond Y2K humbuckers. Both guitars shared many of the features found on the JA90.
