I disagree with the idea of using ordinary pencil graphite for nut lubrication becuse it contains a blend of graphite and clay, and can be quite abrasive depending on the pencil. I believe it is better to use graphite lubricant, which is made for lubricating locks and is available in hardware stores. One tube of it will last a very long time for even the most enthusiastic lock and nut owner. It's very inexpensive.

Thanks for the alternative.

Pencil lead has been used for many years by most if not all Guitar Techs.

Sketching Pencils have many different hardnesses, I wonder if harder or softer Graphite is better?

Yep, a softer pencil will work better. I have used it with no ill effects on the nut and bridge for over to 40 years. I still have the original nuts and hardware on all of my guitars. You can always use Big Bends Nut Sauce if you're worried about it.

Been using #2s for well over 30 years. No problems yet. And one of these guitars I've had since '75.

I've been using it on the nut of my 63 Supro Martinique since 1964. Still the original nut. If the clay was so abrasive, it would tear the paper you were writing on and the graphite wouldn't be so slippery.

I stand corrected. I'll start using a pencil. It's a lot less messy than the lock lubricant.

Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Started using a #2 pencil on the nut of my violin when I was in grade school. Kept that same idea when I switched to a guitar, but went to auto. pencil lead because of the size of the nut slots. It worked then, and it still works now. I think the point (no pun intended) is to lubricate without affecting anything else. Have you ever felt clay when it gets wet? Slick, very slick!!!

And the cool thing is, after you lubricate the nut, you can write a letter :P

Or make notes on your sheet music. And if you are in Jr. High (25+ years ago), you can stick your pencil in the hair of the girl in front of you and tell her it's a grass hopper! Well worth the scolding I got when she flipped out - still brings a smile to my face.

Or hang the pencil from your nostrils, and then tap her on the shoulder. Ahh, JR High.
