Hello Everyone, I am hoping to get couple opinions from the experts here before i pull the trigger on a trade deal that came up. As you can prob see by my profile, I have an epiphone dot made in korea that i bought brand new 3 yrs ago. The guitar is still in mint shape (I take very good care of my guitars) And, plays excellent. But, i am a strat guy and strats are more comfy to me. Anyway, i listed the guitar on craigslist lookin for trade only for nice mim strat or possibly a squier classic vibe. I had a email from a guy who offered one of the listed guitars. 1990 mim stratocaster red in excellent shape or, 2002 mim strat midnight wine with a nick around the tone control good condition otherwise, 2000 mim strat in black excellent condition or, 1980 mij squier stratocaster cream in excellent shape. I have emailed him, back asking about the condition of the frets etc And requested him to send me pictures of the guitars. Also, what can anyone tell me about the mij squier? Thanks in advance.

Dave.

the 80's circa MIJ Squires were excellent guitars IMHO.

One of my good friends has a blonde one, and he's left it all stock, it's fantastic.

1980 squier? or is it a 1980's squier? I have a 87 squier, and have had several MIM from different years, I personally prefer MIJ guitars to MIM, but the MIM would probably have better electronics. Price range wise they're all about the same.

Could probably tell you more about the MIJ if we've seen pics. They came in a lot of different styles, where the MIM are probably just Standards.

Without a doubt the MIJ - holy cow!

MIMs have really only gone up in quality in the more recent years. Japanese Fender/Squier instruments have always been phenomenal - but particularly those of the early-to-mid 80's.

Thanks for the replies guys. When i seen the squier mij i kinda perked up a bit cos i know how good the mij fenders were But, i heard the squiers were just as good as the japan fenders...i requested on my ad that it has to be maple fretboard and 3 single pups..no humbuckers (i'm old skool...I don't believe strats should have humbuckers..unless your eddie van halen...No offense to the hss strat owners out there...Just my preference) I would like to get the pics of it and, post them here get opinions on it for authenticity or whatever. I paid $ 550 for the epi with case new I know it is not worth that much now but i see them going for $350 or bit more now on CL. Anyway, i will post pics asap And, Thanks again for the help.

All thing being equal in terms of condiion more-or-less, as a strat guy, you could grab any of the MIMs and probably be happy with them... BUT I reckon you would always wonder what the MIJ squier would have been like. I'm not sure you would have the same feeling about any of the MIMs if you go for the MIJ...

I agree about the SSS.. not to bash fat strats but why lose the bridge single coil? That's a very important sound in a strat!

And yes - disregard the Squier logo in this case. I am interested in what serial number pops up. An E or A series value-wise should certainly be at minimum on par with your Dot so long as the guitar is all-original, fully functional, and in decent shape.

Ok, talked to the guy on phone a little while ago. Found out the cream colered squier was a MIK stratocaster with maple fretboard But the MIJ one he was talking about is black w/ white single ply 11 hole pickguard rosewood neck and tuners are the only thing not original on it. The serial number on it is E942506. And is suppose to be excellent condition. we set it up for monday he will bring that and the other 3 mim guitars here for me to check out. But, i have my mind on the MIJ strat. I take it that it is an E series MIJ guitar. Any opinions or info on it?

yeah that strat is exactly like my squier, so it's probably around 1987. Nice guitar. I would trade a dot for it. I have a 2010 Cherry dot myself.

I had one like the one pictured without the locking tremelo system and a maple neck... and after I swapped out the pickups and tone pots, it was a fantastic playing guitar! It had the good gotah tuners on it, the Squiers of that period where very good guitars!

FWIW

Ok ppl....Heres the verdict. I did not pull the trigger on the deal. Few reasons why i backed out, 1, I realized that i was not too crazy about selling it. I have friends who own gibson 335 guitars who say that mine plays and sounds just as good if not better than thiers (i swear it's true) I even let one friend use it on a gig in a blues bar instead of his 335 and, it performed flawlessly. Anyway, reason 2, The wife found out about the trade consideration and was bummed out. When i asked her why, She told me that she really likes the way that one looks and sounds Which i was surprised cos, i did not think she did not care for any of my guitars Except for my american strat Which i let her pick out the color n stuff. 3. The usual friends asking me, "What do you want another strat for? You allready have one! Play the damn thing !" But, most reason is because the guy seemed elusive on certian questions And, when he seen that i was really set on the squier japan one, He started indicating he might need more than my epi in trade. So, i just decided to keep my 335. But, I do want to thank everyone for the responses and help and, opinions. You guys are great. Happy holidays to all of you incase i do not post anything by then.

You must be local to Detroit. That guy is always trying to sell his guitars at a premium. He wants top dollar and never budges on his price. I wouldn't trust a guy who's best shots of a guitar are taken from his toilet seat view....(that's a joke, but his prices are very true)

Hello Detroitblues,....I was mostly raised on east side of detroit ( 6 mile gratiot) Now residing north of the city in town called new haven. Anyway, I talked to the guy on the phone and, he was pretty friendly. When i called him and told him i was backing out of the sale, He was not mad at all He understood my reasons for backing out. Seemed like really nice guy. We talked for quite awhile on phone about guitars n such. Seems he has quite a few guitars and, I told him that i would like to stop in and look at his guitars sometime. Which, he said i would be welcome to. By the way, if you see a 89 black korean squier strat hss on CL, That ones mine i have posted along with a squier jagmaster. Have a happy holiday to you and the rest of the forum..
