I don't play guitar, so your patience and tolerance would be appreciated as well as your opinions/advice.

I'm looking to purchase a guitar as a graduation gift for my son who's a self-proclaimed fender guy and has been playing for years.

He currently plays a Mexican Standard Stratacaster (his 2nd guitar) and the advice I've received so far from seasoned guitarists that know him (and my budget) is to go with the American Deluxe HSS Strat ~ just to provide some background on the situation.

I saw the QMT and FMT american deluxe HSS while looking up the the suggested guitar and the QMT really caught my eye as something that may blow him away. I'm trying to weigh the value of spending the extra $250. So my questions are -

What's the difference between having the 2 Hot Samarium Cobalt Noiseless™ Strat® Pickups (Middle/Neck) on the QMT
-- versus - -
the 1 Samarium Cobalt Noiseless™ Strat® Pickup (Middle) and 1 Hot Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Strat Pickup (Neck) on the American Deluxe HSS ?
___________________________________________________________
What are the pros and cons of having only one
Master No-Load Tone Control on the QMT
versus
Tone Control 1. (Neck Pickup) and
Tone Control 2. (Middle/Bridge Pickups and Neck/Middle/Bridge Pickup Combinations) on the Amer. Del. HSS ?
___________________________________________________________

Which would you rather receive as a gift and why ?

Thanks.

Great question! As for me personally after having played for many years - if I'm blessed with someone wanting to give me a great guitar like that, I would be beside myself if the giver invited me to go along and play, feel and listen to each guitar. So much of tone and feel is subjective and very personal to the player and even though there may be, say 6 identical guitars on the wall they will not be exactly identical in tone & feel.

I'll never forget when my dad bought me my first "good" guitar - I got to go play it and try it out first to make sure it was all I hoped it would be. It was :D

Excellent idea, Take him along and let him pick it out himself.

I'm in my 50's and that would thrill me to have someone do that to me!!!!!

Hot SCN pickups have more D.C. Resistance that means more output and warm tone. The D.C. Resistance on standard SCN pickups for neck & middle is 6.5 K. The hot one is around 10 K-13 K.

QMT/FMT only has ONE tone control, so it's work for every pickups on the guitar, so it's called MASTER. The HSS has 2 tone controls, 1 for neck, and one for middle/bridge...

thanks, that helps with the original question.

i guess in both cases(pups and tone control), it must come down to personal preference?
if you prefer a wider variety of tones to choose from, you go with the non-QMT - if you prefer to have strickly the higher output & warmer tone with less variabilty/range of tone you go with QMT ?

it seems to me the non-QMT must have more tone variability to offer because of 3 different types of pick-ups (vs. 2 on the QMT) and seperated tone controls vs a single master tone control?

i would guess the non-QMT would also be a little more complicated to play because of the variablity it offers?

Have you read about S-1 Switcing? (in specs of both guitars)

the SCN and hot SCN are pretty same things, only the treble respond higher in SCN (because of D.C. resistane)

We can't say the QMT has warmer tone because wood also affected the tone. For this one, i can't answer but maybe this link can help you

http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/options/o ... ywoods.cfm

you can read the wood of the guitars in the specs of each guitar

it'll be easy if you know the guitars well..

Hope this help you

The guitar, sound of the guitar, feel of the guitar, is such a personal choice....I'd let him chose which one to go for. Especially for the amount of money you're willing to spend. If you want it to be a surprise.....maybe have one of his friends engage him in a casual conversation about guitars, and during that conversation......say things such as......"if you could pick any guitar.......what features would you have?"

But....if it's not a surprise......definitely take him out to play and choose one that he really wants. After all......he'll be playing it for years. And.....if you're a couple of hundred dollars away from what you really want to get, and you can afford it, I'd go for it. It's not like you buy a guitar every day.

oh, yes. that was very helpful in understanding that the body wood impacts the tone as do the pick ups.

i did read the s-1 switch spec details with the 5 blade position variations, and honestly, i thought i got the basic concept but i'm confused as why the qmt/fmt and the regular deluxe hss all have the same specs for the 10 positions but the regular has 2 tone control knobs and the qmt/fmt only has 1 - shouldn't they have the same, or do you get different benefits from 1 vs 2?

thanks much for all your help with this.

yes, they have same concept, but looks like the web master just copy the specs. i think the s-1 on QMT/FMT just split the pickups wiring, and the tone works in all position.

You could cut a Guitar out of a big piece of Cardboard, and write "Good For One Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster, 'Cause You Done The Ol' Man Proud" on it.

Most of my Equipment is Gifts from Mom, Dad, or Brother, including my first Strat, which my Gramma was even in on. That makes everything real special. Me and my Brother got our Dad a Epiphone Les Paul a couple Christmas' ago.

You're son's mighty lucky.

yeah, this is exactly the conclusion i came to on the commute home tonight. i can surprise him by telling him we're going someplace else, stop into guitar center and then tell him to pick one out - that'll be suprise enough - then if he picks it out, at least i won't get the wrong one. plus, as you pointed out, $250 isn't worth quibbling over when you're dealing with what should be a life-long treasure.

thanks to everyone for all your thoughts and guidance.
