Hello jim 0001: the reason for fingerboard and especially body binding is to stop moisture entering and leaving the exposed edge grain of the thin timber in those places, which can sometimes cause it to distort and part along the join. Obviously, if you have a one-piece neck you don't have a separate fingerboard, so the issue isn't the same. And in any case, the world is full of rosewood and ebony fingerboards that are unbound without significant problems occuring - millions of them on Fender necks, amongst others. So as far as necks are concerned the protective function of binding is minimal.

Of course, it's also done for visual appeal. It's possible to find the exposed ends of fret slots down the side of a neck less than ideal on the eye, and someone of that mindset might want binding just to make the neck look finished.

Personally, I think binding on Fender necks is interesting simply because it's unusual. I like the binding on the rosewood 'boards on one of the Eric Johnson models. And I have a '75 Reissue Jazz Bass with a one-piece maple neck that has binding: to my eye a bound maple fingerboard looks just fine!

But it's definitely not a necessity.

Cheers - C

EDITED: for dumbo spelling mistakes (the ones I've so far noticed...). Lord, this dysloxia is a pane in bakside.

You are very welcome! :)

And if you've already placed the order then the fact the Custom Shop accepted those specs means they think it's a reasonable concept too. I think it'll look fabulous: if you care to come back and post us some photos here when the guitar is in your hands you'll get pages full of admiring comments!

Cheers - C
