Depending on what effects gear you have, you can do virtually any sound (or a halfway decent facsimile of it) with any guitar.

For example, you don't need a homemade 'Red Special' to replicate Brian May's sound, if you know what you're doing.

Conversely, you don't need a Manson guitar to copy Matt Bellamy's sound.

NB: Bellamy doesn't even use Manson guitars exclusively, anyway. He uses them a lot in live situations, but when you see studio footage, he actually uses a lot of different guitars, so assuming all the sounds you hear on Muse CDs are coming from Manson guitars only would be incorrect, anyway.

Matt Bellamy's Gear
gives an estimation on the process used to produce the Muse sound - add to that the numerous hours used by the studio crew...

But to think positively: that guitar will not be the limiting point of the sound. 8)

That article is excellent for a number of reasons, but it also highlights what I was saying... that Bellamy uses a lot more than just Mansons :)

I don't think you need to buy a John Mayer signature at all. Cheaper to buy an standard Strat, and see what you can do with it. Then, if you want to go chasing sounds, you will have plenty of money left over to change the pickups, and still come out better off than buying a signature edition guitar.

OK, colour me confused. You say you can buy a John Mayer signature edition, but buying a much cheaper Strat and swapping out a few pickups would be "too expensive"? I don't really understand that.

I still don't understand what you mean. Sending? Sending of what? Are you referring to mail ordering the pick ups, maybe? Why wouldn't the store where you buy your guitar carry spare parts of their own? Or, if buying the guitar from overseas, do some advance research and buy the replacement pick ups in the same shipment? I'm still not really understanding this...

Hi Markitos07: let's cut to the chase. What country are you in?

well there is a lot more to searching for a sound than just grabbing the right guitar, 50% of it is on the other end of the guitar cord.
He does have a touch screen control that does some really weird stuff on his guitar, and i don't think you will be able to reproduce that with just anything hanging on the wall in your local guitar shop.
