Hi everyone,
I'm going to redo my '99 American Deluxe Strat. I bought it new back in '99 and love everything about it except the tone (or IMHO, the lack of tone) I get from the Vintage Noiseless Pickups. I know everyone has their opinion about pickups and I've always liked the scooped midrange from the Strats of the late '60's and early '70's. I had a '72 Strat back in the day and loved the tone I would get from that thing. So I recently ordered the Voodoo tone kit from Rothstein Guitars and a new pickguard from Warmouth. The tone kit includes a "neck on" push pull switch to install where the neck tone pot goes. It also includes a "midrange tone shaper" that goes where the middle/bridge tone pot would go. This gives the guitar a master tone and a midrange tone control. This always made more sense to me. Also it has what they call a "blow switch" which bypasses the tone controls and wires the bridge and either the middle or neck pickup in series (depending on how you wire it). BTW, I've installed a 4 position switch on my Tele and love the tone of the pickups in series.
Now, after that lengthy lead in, my question to you guys out there is: Has anyone tried this tone kit or a similar setup? It seems like you get some extra tones, a more logical (to me) control setup and lose none of the original tones. A win win situation. What do you think?

I have my tone pots wired to the neck and bridge pickups with the middle pickup without a tone pot. Its all I need.

A few months ago I decided to make my Black '06 Hwy1 a '70s style Strat (w/ black parts and added some CS '69 pups). I noticed a bit of difference in the tone right off the bat. I own several Strats and they all sound different to me. My EC Strat sounds, well like an '90s ES Strat; my 50th Anniversary Strat sound very clean and have that classic Strat sound.

The Hwy1 sounds a little darker to me than the CS '54s. Is this the sound you are talking about?

On a completely seperate note, my home built Andy Summers Tele has the following electronics:

A 5 way switch 1.HB, 2. Single Coil Neck, 3. HB & Broadcaster Bridge pup, 4. Single coil neck & B.B pup.

Tone pot that 0-3 the mid-range is "scooped" or removed, 4-7 treble, 8-10 bass tone.

It has a volume knob that if you turn it down to about 7 or 8 the volume thins out.

Also a push/pull that is 20Db volume boost.

Yes that's pretty much the sound I'm looking for. The setup seems pretty versatile. Your Tele setup sounds awesome.

Thanks! My, "Andy" Tele as I call it, is very versatile. Handy EC "Cream" stuff as well as "Blind Faith," Where it really excells is the "Police."

When I turn the tone knob to about 0-3 the sound thickens, but doesn't become dark at full volume. If I keep the tone the same, turn up the volume boost and turn the main volume down I get very clean & acoustic tones, mind of like a "Fishman" pickup. Since I lose volume with the main volume, the volume boost (preamp) takes up the slack.

I hope you find what you're look for.
