From the "big" vintage guitars collector I know , it is not all vintage guitar sound the same All sound very good but just few have an fantastic tone.

I must say that we talk often about this subject on this forum and few peoples having Fender Custom shop say they sound as good as real vintage fender.

So what makes them fantastic, is it the capacitor, is it some special pickups set, or is it a more resonant wood? Have they realized what it is?

Others might have already added these comments, but here it goes:

Every part of the guitar's materials change everything.

For a '60s Strat sound I would go with a rosewood fret board (this will warm up your sound) Fender used Alder, which is the same wood they use now.

As for the pickups I'm not sure that you should change them. They are just fine. Changing the caps due make a difference, but I would do some research before you just start changing things.

Yes, I'd say the neck is going to be the biggest part of the "62 Strat sound." Maple necks sound a little snappier, which is what I'm guessing that you are trying to change.

I have a '79 Strat with rosewood fretboard, an Ash body and Van Zandt True vintage pickups in it and it sound more like SRV's Strat than any I've played.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for all this. I totally agree on the rosewood fretboard. It is my favorite. My MIM has rosewood fretboard too. I have changed the cap with an orange drop one, of .47. Perhaps another brand or capacitance value could bring me closer to that tone I am after. You are right the pickups on the MIA strat are good. Mine is a 2004-2005 model, so it doesn't have the fat 50's as the 2012 models do. Yet, I believe the change will be the capacitance as it tends to affect the tone even with the tone knobs all on 10.
What I have noticed on youtube while watching videos with 62 strats, is that they usually have a warm mid tone, with a lot of snap and they tend to get gritty easily. While the modern ones sound thin and usually no grit. Of course, I have never played a real 62 on my amp to hear the differences on my hands, as everyones hands play and sound differently.

as for finish, mine had the poly coating removed from the prior owner, and thin nitro coating applied. So I believe it will have improved the resonance. I am about to meet with this guitar of mine (it is a gift from a friend) in January in UK.

Any suggestions as to what type of capacitor I could look for? What are the 62 models using? And at what value, if you know?

In 50's and 60's Fender use a 0.1 MFD , 150 VDC ceramic capacitor .
