Anybody in the UK ever go into Turnkey in London? Legend has it they have a secret room with nice guitars and more significantly where the staff are helpful and polite.

However, you can only get in there via a hyperspace matter transfer beam located at the owner's country estate.

(Anybody at Turnkey object to this: look at your records, guys. You have plenty of my money. So live with it.)

You'll find that your credit card will activate a hyperspace matter transfer beam.

I recognize that some of the price points in the Fender line are eyebrow raising (witness the 'tutition' for the new Fender University progam).

The company is obviouisly aware that many in the boomer generation who grew up with them and cut their chops on the classic guitars when they were new, now have considerable disposable income, and they are creating high end products to satisfy the demand for new "toys".

I hope that providence will find every one of you out there in a time of life where you will be able to realize your dreams.

Never forget....It's all about the music....whether on a Squier or a "Lenny",
and the heart, mind, and virtuosity of the player.

If the "Lenny" is the "aged and tore up looking" guitar that I've seen at GC, it was about $14,000. It was in a special place in the store, and it definitely had a "trashed" look to it. If it wasn't the Lenny, then it was another SRV guitar. I looked at that and just thought to myself....."no way, would I spend that much money on a guitar that looked like a semi truck just ran over it.". But then, it's all about taste.

If I'm going to have battle scars on an expensive guitar. I want to be the one to put them on there.

I agree with this. If a 17 year old comes into a Mercedes car dealer for a test drive, they're probably not going to jump all over the chance to take you out for a ride. But if you have the "look" that you can buy right then and there.......or even look like you have good credit......they'll roll out the red carpet. I'm sure GC is the same way with their high priced guitars.

Well, no-ooo, not always. I'm 43, I roll up at the door in a Jaguar, and those folks have had thousands off my credit card. I still don't have the entrance code for the secret room, though...

Take your business elsewhere, after telling them why. If they're willing to let you go, you didn't need them in the first place. Find a vendor with whom you can do business, who respects your patronage, and keep looking until you do. They are out there. You work hard for your money. So should they.

oh  this thread is about a guitar?

I didn't look close enough and thought it was about Lemmy.

The Lenny in our local GC started at $25,000 and was down to $17,000 a few weeks ago when I bought my new Am Standard Strat. It's not in a hermetically sealed glass room, just hanging a little bit higher than the rest on the wall. It might be cool - but not my cup of tea.

My real purpose was to waggishly suggest that this notorious shop had a legendary room where service was good and freindly, but that it was in fact just that - a legend.

For any Londoners here, this will be a well-known and infamous shop. Huge stock turn-over, often massive discounts, and horrible service from an ever-changing staff of badly paid 17 year-olds.

Your advice is good: don't go there. Trouble is, those discounts. For example, when the Yamaha AW1600 was new out this store was offering it for £200/$400 less than their nearest rival. For rates like that, most of us found ourselves swallowing our pride and shopping there. They really have had many thousands out of me, for one...

However, a further development. Since my first post, after decades in business the store's owners have suddenly gone bankrupt, with the immediate closure of 16 of their 26 outlets. I loathe that shop - but not that much. Don't want those rude people actually losing their jobs. Was it all because of my earlier cheeky post? (That's meant to be tongue-in-cheek, folks.)

Anyway, this is all way, way off topic, so I'll stop now, before I'm shouted at...

Worked at a local music store years ago. This well dressed man bought his "son" in to shop for guitars. The KID wanted to see a Strat, picked out a strap, & plugged into an amp. He had NO talent & was acting like he was a guitar god, doing the "TOWNSEND windmill", dropping to his knees & such, when the strap broke. The owner explained, over the "I'm so sorry!"s, the cost of the Strat. Seems the kid belonged to his girlfriend who was getting her hair styled next door, had no money, & refused to pay for the Strat. After the cops left, the owner was reluctant to let any young adults play the high-end guitars UNLESS they were sitting down on a stool.
Just go to the closest store & hang out til they get to know you. I go to the Guitar Center store here quite often. Everybody at least knows of me & they've never refused to let me play a guitar. I've even been to stores all over the U.S. & have never had the slightest problem.
Remember a couple of things:

Be respectful of the employees.
Be polite.
Be nice.

That's what I've learned & it suits me fine.
