not only play it...own it! i'm not much more than an amateur player so my ear isn't as fine tuned as perhaps it should be, but all modes sound great...the 12 string acoustic is really nice. i have noticed i don't quite get the battery life the manual claims...even with good rechargeables.

regarding sound when the vg is off (dead battery, etc), i can sometimes hear the slightest difference, but it isn't enough to make me want to stop playing.

I have one on display in my store. I like all the sounds. When you are not using the VG pickup it sounds just like an American Series Strat. I think the guitar is really awesome! I particularly like the 12 string sound and drop tuning.

It is a real, honest to goodness, American Stratocastor. I played one and would very much like to add it to my collection, problem is my wife made me agree to a 1 in 1 out policy because a)she says I am a no talent hack, which is true and b)she says I have too many already which is definately not true

Indeed... The digital processing pickup that is on the guitar actually "creates" the dropped tuning sound! It is most impressive and very very cool. I would love to have one myself

Hey chris, dprice... I think that's going to be a frequent complaint heard on these boards! Oh how right you are. Don't they understand that if we only had more gear we'd be awesome players???

play4life, when the vg is on and the knob set to normal (N), i don't think it actually uses the available circuitry...only the standard pickups and plays like a normal strat. in the modeled mode (S), i swear i hear just a bit of difference, but like i've said before, it's definitely not much. in this mode (S), it's a "modeled" strat and opens up the availability of the alt tunings, etc.
thanks and do you know if changing the stock pickups could be done at home or would the wiring be different and need a proffesional?

haven't got a clue about the wiring and pickups. haven't had it long enough to get that deep into it. not to say i didn't overlook it somewhere, but i didn't see the wiring diagrams for this guitar on fender's website. all that said, for what this little beauty costs....i don't believe i'll be doing any "guts" work myself without more experience!!
I had a chance to test one of these out recently and I have to say that I was very impressed. It'll sound just like an American Strat when the circuitry isn't active and the possibilities seem endless when fooling around with the digital stuff. I absolutely love the fact that you can switch tunings with the turn of a knob, making mid-song changes a breeze. It's also something sweet being able to go from standard tuning to baritone or dadgad while still retaining the tension/feel of having your guitar in E standard. If I had the extra scratch laying around I'd definately drop it on one of these.

When you engage the "S" (strat) mode, it is actually modeling what we like to say a more 'vintage strat' tone, say, like with an ASH body.
You should notice just a little more punch in the low end and a biteyer (if that's a real word) sound.
