Hi everybody, I'm new here but have been on TDPRI and Strat talk for many years so I'm looking forward to being a member here.

I was hoping I might get some help here on my 86 AVRI 62 Strat.

Its a Candy Apple Red 62 Avri, neck date January 87 body is an 86 has the Fullerton curves and pots dated 1986.

All the Candy apple red Strats from that year flake and chip very easily there are many many pics of them all over the web nad so does mine but under the CAR and the Gold which instead of wood showing through there is a light red plastic color? is this undercoat? sealer or fulerplast maybe?

I havent seen any other AVRI from that year with such an undercoat so I was wondering if anybody knows what this might be?

I understand that guitars where put together that year from left over Fullerton parts.

Here are some pics

thanks in advance

Hi 42soundz, welcome!

Let me give you my disclaimer first: :)

While I have handled alot of the AVRI's from the 80's most of that handling was done in the final stages of the guitars completion. So my finish knowledge is limited.
What I remember seeing the most on Candy Apple Red bodies was the gold undercoat which I believe helped with the metal flake appearance. I can't say that I've never seen a reddish undercoat as pictured, but nothing stands out.

You might want to check out this site---it has some pretty cool info, though again, I have no idea of the accuracy of the info contained.
http://www.guitarhq.com/fenderc.html I know that we're talking about AVRI's in 86, but since the idea of that series when Dan Smith started them in 82 (or so) was to make em like they were being made in those years, as much as possible, the same procedures, mixes, etc were used. When we re-started production in Corona, the same idea was still in place.

I don't know that I can agree that the Candy Apple Reds flake or chip any more or less than the other colors produced from the same time...on the other hand, I wouldn't conclusively state that they don't. Some of the chips pictured make sense to me (Neck slot).....some...not so much.
At any rate....thats all i got. Hope it helped a little.
All the best,
rob
