Hi All

I have one of those loaded pick-guards with DiMarzio Area pickups 51-67-61, with a push pull pot, but for some reason they don't seem to have the same tonality as in other pups you hear on you tube. The quack in positions 2 & 4 seem diminished and the bell like straty sound seems to give way to a midrangy tone, I wouldn't say muddy at this point. I played it through three amps, a BJ tweed, and a DRRI, and a on a Crate 212 solid state.

On the positive side they aren't thin and with some pedals you can get a sweet sound, but not vintage tone I was after... something is missing compared to the character I hear on other guitars. Could it be the wiring?

I brought the pups down closer to the pick-guard (which usually helped with tone somewhat with SCN pups) the tone improved but naturally at the expense of being relatively thin. The EQ didn't help that much at that point, it seemed to me that I missed the sweet point on the pup.

Any advice is highly appreciated
in the end YMMV
Cheers
HNS

Sounds to me that you bought the wrong pickups for your taste in tone.

I can't say I hate them .. but they're not my first choice. I know that they'e good quality pups but i didn't like them clean ... I liked them - somewhat - with a distortion pedal. I've got only one strat, so that's why I didn't want to keep them.

Nope. Pickups are too personal a choice. Ask for a recommendation for a good pickup and you will get dozens or more answers. Like I said, I love the sound of SCNs in my Strat.
