Hey guys/gals, I was wondering, is there an alternative way to get the David Gilmour Strat? (the unrelic'd version http://products.fendercustomshop.com/en ... 0150069806 )

I've always thought David's black strat was beautiful(love the tainted yellow neck on the black body) but I just don't wanna get a signature guitar. So are there any alternatives for me to get this strat? Does Fender sell anything similar (doesn't have to have the same pickups)?

I just saw this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReSTE1E1 ... ture=g-u-u and around 9:00 he demonstrates using this mini switch that uses the neck pickup in the first three positions and it sounds amazing! Is this new from Fender? I've never seen that before on any guitars? Is the Gilmour model the only one that has that?

You can do the mod yourself with simple wiring.

+1

I'd think so too... a black MIM body, a tinted fender neck, apparently his black strat's neck is a 1983 Fender '57 RI... a cheaper alternative would be a MIM '50's RI neck. If you wanted a cheaper nitro finished alternative, Allparts makes some pretty nice necks in a variety of shapes, MJT offeres many on ebay, some are "closet clean", some relic'd. Then just get the pups, hardware, and plastic and wire it up... I think you could make a pretty sweet copy for quite a bit less.

I made my own "version" with a MIM body, tinted neck, all the essentials to make it look like the "black Strat" i wasn't out to build an exact replica per say, i just really like the look of that guitar. Probably helps that I'm a huge Pink Floyd, and Gilmour fan. realyy didn't see the point in a $4000 guitar, when you can spend a little time and do it yourself. Here is a link to the wiring mod...very simple. Also gilmourish.com has a lot of info on all thing Gilmour.

Go to http://www.siglermusiconline.com. >guitars>electric>920D Custom
They used to do a black strat with the pickups and wiring used in the Fender Gilmour. I don't see it presently, but you can certainly call them and ask if they will build one for you. They use MIM Standards and they price nicely. There's presently a replica of the #001 and the Red Strat with the EMG's.

Hello hendrik84: Gilmour's Black Strat is essentially a partoscaster that he rebuilt several times. In its latest incarnation it's a '50s spec neck bolted to a '69 body with some custom electronics.

So you can easily recreate it (as many people do) by shopping for a '50s reissue Strat with its 7.25" radius fingerboard from the American, Mexican or Japanese lines, depending on your budget. And then, if you don't want to do the electronics yourself, just type "Gilmour black Strat pickguard" into Google and you will find numerous people out there offering replica pickguards with all the right bits on the underside to simply drop into your guitar.

You'll also want to hacksaw a section off the end of the trem arm, for full Gilmour authenticity.

Here's the history and spec sheet, so's you can check all the features:

http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=66

After that you just need to buy a set of Dave's hands and ears and you're ready to go!

Cheers - C

Back to the question. http://www.stratcat.biz is another good source. They provide the heavy plastic pickguard as part of the setup.

This the second such discussion on the matter in a few short weeks. I'm going to index these sources for future reference because my 70 yo brain can't keep up. :?

There are tons of pictures on the Internet featuring Gilmour "Black Strat" replicas with EMGs.

Hi Chromeface: though the neck is completely wrong in every respect on that one, if Gilmour authenticity is what someone's aiming for. The owner of that guitar is telling the world; "I like everything about Gilmour's Black Strat body, but I prefer a WDMusic neck with 22 medium frets, a pale lacquer and 9.5" radius 'board."

On the Division Bell tour the Floyd reportedly travelled with 700 tons of equipment in 53 trucks and a crew of 160. There's a lo-o-o-o-ong way to go for a guy who's chasing authenticity!

Cheers - C

From the OP's perspective, an economical Fender NOS lookalike/playsalike is what is sought.

.....and strip it of all it's charisma. It is what it is, mate. IMHO my NOS beats the pants off what DG walked out of Manny's Music with some 40 odd years ago. I knew that place well. Them days are gone forever. :?
