I just recently started playing my son's American Standard Strat 0107402. I noticed that in switch positions 4 & 5, when the center "tone" control is supposed to control the tone, it does not. Both the Volume control & the Tone control closest to the Volume control control volume & there is no tone control for these 2 positions at all. I unscrewed the pickguard & compared the wiring to the wiring diagram on the Fender website under "Support", & it seems to match what Fender says it should be. Positions 1,2,3 work fine, with 1 volume & 1 tone control. Can anyone help me?

Let's get this straight first

1. Bridge
2. Bridge and Middle
3. Middle
4. Middle and Neck
5. Neck

1 Volume, 2 Tone controls.

the first tone control controls the tone of the neck pickup. this will work in position 1 and 2. the second tone control controls the middle pickup. this will work in the 2 3 and 4 positions. I have never played a strat that is set up differently.

I've got the guitar in front of me right now. Position 1 is with the switch in the position closest to the cable jack. In this position, the knob marked volume, the knob closest to the neck controls the volume, & the tone control closest to the cable jack controls the tone. The knob in the middle has no affect at all. Same for positions 2 & 3 which are the next 2 clicks foreward (towards the neck). In both positions 4 & 5, the tone knob closest to the cable jack has no affect at all. Both the Volume & the "middle" tone knob, control volume. Put both those knobs on 5 & turn either one to 1 & the volume drops out completely, there is no tone control whatsoever on the guitar. I've just double & triple checked what I just posted on the guitar as I typed this out & this is what I have.

That is strange. I would have it checked out by a Tech.

Possibly a blender pot?

Crow - I just noticed your topic and might have an explanation.

The guitarnuts website has a mod that involves moving a wire from one tone pot to another (check out that website - it's a good resource). I can't recall exact details but it gives tone control over the pickup nearest the bridge (which isn't possible with "stock" strat wiring). The downside is that you lose tone control over the neck pickup.

I've done this with a strat clone, and your description of the guitar's controls sounds similar to mine. Of course, if your son has owned the strat from new then what I've suggested isn't likely......!
