The root of this problem is that I didn't understand a practically undocumented feature of my new Seiko electronic tuner.

The tuner is able to do a thing called transpositional tuning, which is used for wind instruments. What this means to guitar tuning is that if you strike a E note, the tuner will display it as something other than an E.

For guitar tuning the scale should be set to C. I had inadvertently set it to E flat.

Tuning then became a real adventure for me as I kept tightening the strings and my tuning clearly did not make sense. The tremolo bridge was raising higher and I was quite alarmed.

After quite some time and experimentation I figured out that I should be using C instead of transpositional tuning.

Now all is well, but it was quite an unpleasant way to find out that there is such a thing as transpositional tuning.

The manual for the Seiko tuner says the feature is there, but doesn't explain what it is. I figured that striking an E should always display as an E. Alas, that is not the case.

For $15 you can buy a Korg guitar tuner thats good for a bass guitar also. It may be worth checking out if your having trouble with your current tuner thats designed for wind instruments and guitars. At least you would have a tuner strickly for guitars and its affordable.

I'll second the advice for the Korg Tuner...I think it's the best for the buck...you can pick one up about anywhere.

What model Korg are you referring to?
