Thanks dude! 8)

One does try! I seem to remember there used to be loads of threads just like this one in the Strat forum. Always enjoyed checking out forums users build/mod threads.

Cheers!

Hey Andy, you are way too young to have something like this! Bummer. Odd thing is, I have the same thing (L5/S1). My dr told me that as it grows worse that it will cause my left foot to go numb and other related issues. BUT the good news is, I started exercising. I do crunches every morning and am up to 250-300 every day. Been doing that for 3 years now. Plus walking a lot and lost some weight by eating better and no late night meals. My back is way better. I back pack (like this summer and fall did places in and around the Grand Canyon). So there is hope! Building the muscles up around your lower back helps support and hold in place the L5 better. Mine still hurts from time to time, but nothing a few ibuprofen can't take care of. Bummer thing is, standing for a long time playing guitar is one of the things that hurts it the most! Anyhow, I can empathize! Take care and hope you get better. Bummer about the burns mate.

I enjoy modding out strats tremendously!

My 08 Amer DLX has had a floyd rose recessed installed and Dimarzios Wired American Standard. Which I might say I will never undertake myself again.
I used an Injector Neck an Aera 61 Middle and a D'Activator F Spaced Bridge on it

I only put a lonestar pickguard and a Dimarzio Evolution in Highway one I am gonna do a Blade Runner on it.

Howdy X Man,

Man, your right. I am too young for this! That said I've been acting like I'm 18 for the last 14 years and see this injury as a sign that I'm no longer invincible.

At 32 years old you'd think I'd be smart enough to do some stretches before commencing a bit of graft at work. Although I can't pin down the exact moment it happened I'm fairly sure moving the weights room at work was what did it. Still I'd like to think I was in pretty good shape. Now I feel like an old man! :|

Dude, nice work on the sit ups you must be ripped! I've got some exercises which do a pretty good job of loosing me up in the mornings and plenty of Ibuprofen takes the edge off the pain in my leg. It just those moments where I step a little too far that makes that really sharp painful "Oh my god, my leg is going to fall off" sensation.

Ah well, results of the scan are in tomorrow so we'll see what the score is.

Thanks again folks!

Andy & Randel the Cat

Howdy. Working in heavy construction as a pipefitter for 30+ years, I've had some back trouble from time to time. If you are not injured, I would suggest a chiropractor for relief of pain and sliding the offender back into place. But as they say, IMHO YMMV ETC. :)

Andy, mate: this is bad news. But I'm here to tell you, it's fixable, especially for a fit, physically aware and focused person like you.

I had a herniated disc about eight years ago at everyone's favourite bit of the spine, L5/S1. (I hear Toyota have a manufacturer's recall notice out on that pesky joint.) It was very bad indeed: the most acute pain lasted for a couple of years and was often so intense I'd have gladly had a full body amputation if it had been offered. I couldn't so much as hold a guitar for about 18 months and for a while after that could only strum one only lying on my back on the floor. Not fun.

However, with serious, grown-up physio and a huge amount of work on my part which continues to the present day things gradually got better and these days I'm about 98% in the spine department, so long as I don't do stupid things with it.

The bad bit is that deep tissue damage like spinal discs can take a very long time to recover. But the good news is that it can go on gradually healing over a very long period, like months and years - contrary to what you are often told. Doing the right things to mobilise your back and not damage it further are a really important part of that.

Whatever you do, don't let the surgeons at you. Surgery is the beginning of a long downward slide to more and more surgery until they've done everything they can - and you are fa-a-a-ar too young to start on that dismal road. On the other hand, physiotherapists always seem to be the most positive medical people you meet and for some reason are nearly always sparky young women in their late twenties, so it is particularly pleasant to follow their advice. Go for it! :D

I have many more encouraging things to offer if needed. I know it hurts, but be positive. It'll work out OK for you. Meantime, this:

Though I gotta tell you, my cats can get into those Dreamies bags in about 30 seconds flat. Claws and teeth are the trick, Randel... 8)

mid Townsend Windmill if I'm not mistaken
+1 with Ceri's thoughts on your injury Andy, get yourself some physio, don't know if Chiro is a recognised medical treatment, may well be today, a few years ago I had an injury which left every nerve in my left arm screaming 24-7 popping co-codemol like smarties, went for physio treatment but was put on waiting list  anyhoo pain was so bad I sought out a chiroprat, 3 or 4 appiontments later, a lighter wallet, and back on the co-codemol the next day after each appointment I finaly got a Physio appointment, talking to the physio about the chiro, he gave that sort of all knowing dissmissive nod when I described the treatment, anyhoo as with Ceri I had a nice female student present ( a bonus) so the physio gets my shirt off ask's me to stand straight arms by my side takes a look diagnoses the problem in seconds, gave me exercises to stretch muscle and tendons around affected area went back a week later and he did a bit of arm that way head this way and clicked my first rib back into place, just a matter now of keeping up the exercises, now there may well be good chiropracters around I've only dealt with one of them I may well have picked a dud, anyhoo Andy get well soon

Howdy Chaps!

I'm very grateful for the advice and sympathy of those of you who have had this kind of injury. Seems the L5/S1 is indeed a popular source of pain for many of us! Can't help thinking that I've wasted my time wishing for a third testicle when I should have be focusing on perfect bipedal functionality. :P

I'm sure you'll all agree proper manual handling training and awareness is key to preventing this sort of thing happening. Remember kids, when lifting, follow the Peter Griffin method and put all the weight on your groin and lower back then lift in a sharp twisting jerking motion and you too could join the L5/S1 club.

Well the results for the scan are in... and it's not good. Not good at all. :(

But the Big Hairy folk are manly, man men...so I'm not going to dwell on that as...

Firstly I consider pipefiting to be a true Jedi art. We had a proper pipefitter at work over the summer to refurb the Fitness suit (which I munched my back moving) & changing rooms. For some of the areas they used a commercial compression system similar to the Viega stuff. Looks fantastic!

Anyhoo - I digress. Several people I've spoken to have recommend their Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Osteopaths, as the way forwards. I have a friend who swears he's a Psychopath... Hang on.. I think he was the Chiropractor...They're the crunchy one's right?

Now then...

There's something for everyone in a Big Hairy thread my friend!

Yeah, Kind of looks that way but I assure you, Randel the Cat is all about the "Shred"!

Thinking about it, I reckon Strats & Cats would make a great thread!

Don't you just love his little white booties/ awesome mitts of razor sharp doom! (almost compromised Randel's ninja on-line image) :D

Thank you all for your kind posts. Still blows me away how once we get past the love of Fender Guitars & Amps, there's a real friendly, supportive and caring core to the community here. You guys rock! 8)

Cheers!

Sorry to hear about your back Andy. Wish you all the best. I am eternally grateful that at age 42 I have never had any kind of back problems. Just one incident of knee trouble.

But on to the important topic at hand:

Molly says that bag of 'Dreamies' looks like her 'Temptations' (maybe a different branding on different sides of the pond?) She says Randel should try the 'Dentabits' kind. They're better for the fangs, and are crunchier and more fun to eat, than the other flavours. If he needs help sneaking them, she says she can teach him how to open any cupboard or cabinet without a lock to get them.

That brand is the only cat treat she likes.

I've always wondered why they have Chicken, Duck, Salmon, and Tuna among the varieties, but never Mouse, or Moth, or any of the stuff she actually hunts.

Very similar - maybe the same. We have Temptations too, though here they're sold under the Whiskas meta-brand, so perhaps Dreamies are a different company's take on the same concept, I don't know. Anyhow, cat snacks with soft centres... for f-f-flip's sake! Where has civilisation arrived at?

Dreamies are the tops, but my cats also go ape for Thrive dried chicken snacks from a cardboard tube - the snack looks about as appetising as cardboard too, far as I can see, but what do I know? We also have an item called Cutessy (yuk!) that looks like a Peperami but smells... well, it smells pretty similar when it goes in as to when it comes out again. Lord knows why they want to eat it, but they'll tear your hand off to get it.

Weird people, cats.

***

And to Andy: I've replied to your email essentially saying what I'll repeat here for you and anyone else in the throws of back pain horror - there is masses of hope, especially if you are prepared to work hard at it. (I really like Jeff/Xhefri's attitude, above.)

From a guy who was at one time staggering in the street from lamp post to lamp post in weeping pain but is now so recovered he's merrily going for 15 mile yomps across the landscape as many times a week as he can - it doesn't have to be a downward slide towards crippledom.

So chin up! :D

Cheers - C
