Guys, you are not going to believe this one.

I just purchased a gorgeous 2006 Fender American Standard Strat in 3-tone sunburst, with maple fretboard, on Craigslist, from a guy in Florida.

He emailed me to say that he shipped it to NJ today, via UPS, in the HSC with no box! He said he was going to box it, but the guy at UPS told him that it would be okay to ship without a box. UPS then told the seller that he'd slap a few "FRAGILE" stickers on the case, for good measure.

Do you believe it? I don't. I'm sick over it.

I already emailed the seller and told him that if the case arrives showing the least sign of abuse or damage, I'm going to refuse the package.

Thanks goodness I consummated this transaction thru PayPal, using my AMEX card.

I have seen several shipped that way. Unfortunately they did not fair well on the trip. UPS should know better.

One of the ones I saw the shipper used 2 rolls of duct tape and taped the entire case. What a mess that one was.

If the guitar gets damaged in shipping UPS will deny the claim because the guitar was not properly boxed.

Wow. Bad move on his part (and UPSs). Whenever I've shipped guitars, it was in HSC in a box with plenty of filler peanuts. Big boxes that can fit a guitar are hard to find and clumsy to move about - but a surer bet for a worry-free delivery.

On that note (bent and vibrated), even worse is traveling by airplane with a guitar. You must check it as luggage. It was a classical guitar so I was doubly worried. In this case, I have the hardshell case locked and a plastic tie for extra security (ha). I also stuffed the case with towels to prevent damage from, say, turbulence or careless baggage handlers. In the end, the guitar and case survived without any issues.

But I wouldn't trust the same treatment from UPS (or other shippers). I've seen some fantastically horrid shipping results.

Yeah no kidding, you did the right thing. The only good way to look at it is you know the guys handling it will know for sure what they are handling and may take care of it.

I know your pain; when serving in Hawaii I got my guitar work done at "Stringman" a local guitar repair shop on Nimitz Hwy. I can't remember the guys' names anymore; it was 78 to 82; anyway he told me his buds at the airport took guitars out of the cases and played them in the terminal. IMHO that's an invasion of privacy and a on the spot firing offense.
When I left there I took the neck off my 70s strat and carried it as carry on; I just had to I just sweat it out takaminie 340 ef or some thing or other.
Yeah some ebayer shipper; I think you got a issue with UPS fopr ACCEPTING such apoorly shipped axe. I would be contacting Ebay RIGHT now.

That's really poor. UPS and the seller should know better... Next time I'll choose FEDEX.

No you don't, at least not for domestic US flights. Guitars are exempt from the carry-on regs. There is a letter from the TSA specifically stating this. As of the 2 months ago I had no problems carrying a guitar on an airplane as my piece of carry on luggage.

A copy of the letter is here: http://www.local802afm.org/about/TSALetter.pdf

In theory you need to be a union member, but practically they don't differentiate. Also, Delta Airlines had a policy specifically allowing guitars, violins and other small instruments.

Maybe you should have communicated with the seller more and asked about the way he was going to package and ship it.

Let us know how you it ends up and good luck !

UPS insurance will be no good in this case (no pun intended) because the guitar and case were not properly boxed.

Well, guys, UPS delivered my Strat today. I stayed at home, just to be here when it happened.

The Strat AND the case made it from Florida to New Jersey unscathed! I know it's unbelievable, but it's true.

The case was none the worse for wear, save for a few FRAGILE stickers and the UPS Delivery label affixed to the outside. A little GooBeGone and the labels were history. A little spray polish and the case is looking great.

Inside, the Strat was exactly as described by the seller - not a mark on it. It's absolutely gorgeous, too.

I wouldn't have shipped it this way myself, but I'm so glad that this story has a happy ending.

Thanks for caring.
