From what I've read, the Stratocaster was designed from the ground up for mass production. I wonder why they didn't, at some point, start making the bodies out of plastic instead of wood. You'd think that would be more friendly to industrial processes.

Has anyone tried making solid body guitars out of plastic, and how do they differ in sound etc. from the wooden guitars?

Thanks.

Academically speaking, Dan Armstrong made some plexiglass basses and guitars... I think they still may have reissues of same.

I know that Charlie Parker played some rather exotic "glass" saxes during his abbreviated career.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there are a few plastic strats floating around.

Fender has made a Strat with Lucite, Ampeg have done several models, the sound was somewhat damped and the weight incredibly heavy

Hello RudyH,

As Alain stated earlier "incredibly heavy"

Also incredibly expensive, we commonly
think "cheap plastic", The amount it would
take to make a solid plastic strat would be
cost prohibitive.

Polycabonate, polypropylene,ABS,Delrin
Polystyrene,polyethylene,Acetate,Noryl to
name a few, would all cost over $100 in
body material alone.

The Dan Armstrong is also thinner than a
Standard Stratocaster. I think the reissues sell
for about $1300.

Cheers.
