Potential purchasers of Fender guitars should obtain as much relevant information regarding model, and year as possible, including proported serial numbers before finalizing a deal. There are plenty of resources out there to help corroborate a seller's representation, thus possibly avoiding the kind of thread we are seeing below from the UK.

Caveat emptor is the watchword in the marketplace.

I agree. Find out as much about the guitar you are planning to buy before you buy it.

I agree. I made the mistake of buying without checking serial numbers out. I'm not sure if its a 'real' neck or not, but I got lucky because it plays great!

You don't want to get burned so don't take the chance :)

A most interesting representation of the demonstration of authenticity was not too long ago on Ebay. A Long Island dealer was offering an EC Signatuare Strat. '89 I believe, (SE9...) in what we would call "CC" condition.
The guitar was photographed intact and disassembled...showing neck dates and serial numbers, body cavity dates, back plate...One of the most exhaustive revelations of a guitar's credentials I've ever seen on line. You could even read the dates on the pots.

Some of the Chinese copies ( $170 gets you a VG) are coming out with legitimate looking serial numbers since when they copied the guitar, they also copied the serial number. Only way to tell is a teardown.
