Alder is a much more civilized wood than ash. When you rout an ash body all you get is a bunch of ash holes. Stinky too. That old fashioned cover for the bridge was known as an ash-tray and we all know how smelly those can get. Alder on the other hand does it's civic duty. Men who stand up and be heard are sometimes known as alder-men.

And there you have the most important difference in those woods ... by far.
Choose alder. Stevie did.
There. I said it.

This old thread rears it's head again.

Either is my choice.

I have two identical Am. Std. Strats except being a year apart and having maple/rosewood fret boards. Have two identical Ric. 360's except for color. They all sound different when strummed, unplugged, but sound identical coming out of a speaker.

Get the ash Strat and the alder Strat you are considering side-by-side. Put your nose on each one and squint, then step back two feet and look, then step back 5 feet and look. Then pick whichever you think is prettiest! :D

One of the factors feeding the debate is the uniformity of Alder and the diversity of Ash.

Take 10 Alder blanks of the same dimension, and within a couple %, they're gonna weigh the same, have the same density, and the same resonance.

Do the same thing with Ash and you'll see wide variations in weight, density and resonance.

People who get a 'good' piece of Ash (no pun intended  ) are gonna swear by it, say it's more resonant.

Those who get a not so good piece are likely to say there's no difference between the two woods.

I'll quote Stephen Stills and say: "Love the one you're with..."

cheers!
