My son and I both have stratocasters. Mine is a 3 single coil American that I use for blues and for general playing. My son has a Mexican "Fat Strat" (2 single coils, one humbucker pickup) and he is finding that he spends all of his time playing the humbucker because he likes the "heavy" sound. I have variously read this described as "growly" or "ballsy".

Can you recommend some techniques for getting the most growly sounds out of the stock stratocaster? Our amp is a Line 6 Spider Jam, which is very versatile.

Perhaps links to examples and "how-to-play-it" type stuff will help.

As usual, I appreciate your time and consideration.

For starters you will not get the same "heavy", "growly", or "ballsy" sound out of single coils as you do a humbucker.

Moving the pickups closer to the strings will give you more volume, and more distortion, but less sustain.
Experiment with Amp settings and FX pedals.

You might want to try a compression/sustainer footpedal like the Boss or others.

Perhaps an overdrive pedal, such as an Ibanez TS9?

Seymour duncan makes a single coil pickup that is actually a humbucker, its stacked... very nice... this would give you some balls to that strat if you were willing to spend the $ on this mod

I haven't tried the SD stacked singles. I have tried the Gibson stacked 'bucker and didn't like it much.

My personal opinion is I wouldn't recommend any SD pup for any guitar.
