Hello,
I'm new to your forum and just wanted to say hello. I would like some opinions on strings. I just bought my second Strat last week after a 20 year hiatus. I have been out of the loop as far as what the best strings on the market are. I prefer the lightest gauge I can get. Years ago I played D'Adarrio half-rounds and Ernie Ball Super Slinky's. What's new and exciting? Help Rip Van Winkle here who just woke up from a 20 year nap.

Far Rider.

I've been using the Fender Bullets in both 9's and 10's for about a year now on my strats and have been very please with the tone.

I'm a beginner... so I've tried a few light gauge strings to get accustomed to playing. The Ernie Ball Super Slinkys are my favorites.

I have been playing for over 40 years, and I have tried virtually every brand of strings. IMO, nothing compares to D'Addario XLs for electric guitar. The tone is bright and clear, they last, and most important they intonate correctly. They are extraordinarily consistent from pack to pack, and the packaging makes it possible to keep lots of sets on hand, and find them fresh and good even a year after purchase.

In every aspect of performance, nothing touches XLs.

I'm with Jim... D'Addario XLs are money!!!

But just buy a couple brands and see which ones you like.

At 4 or 5 bucks a pack, don't be afraid to change them out if you don't like 'em....

I recommend trying out several different brands to find what you prefer.

You come on the end of a recent discussion regardings original equipment strings for the Stratocaster. The company advised us that '10's are installed on 'vintage' type guitars because that was the gauge originally supplied. '9's are installed on more recent instruments. They are considered more 'player friendly' Players preferences range from very heavy gauges to light and there's a tone theory behind many preferences or an artist who favored it.

It's your choice. Just thought you'd like the 'heads up' given that it had been a topic of discussion here.

Play 10s. When you bend good, sometimes 9s squeal.

I like the coated D'adarrio (MXL, I think) in 11's. For my MIM Strat I had to add a couple of springs to the bridge due to the greater tension from 11's (vs. the factory 9's). So, now I operate with a total of 5 bridge springs. It works well and I didn't even need to change the intonation.

I don't think D'Adarrio makes anything heavier than 11's for electrics. I know my local shop doesn't sell anything heavier unless you switch to acoustic strings.

I'm using Markley with nickel and getting some great tone out of the Texas Specials in my Highway One.

They make sets as heavy as a 13 on top (they refer to them as "Jazz" Strings), and I think you can make up custom sets from individual strings even heavier than that. Your store likely doesn't carry them because sop few people would buy them.
