Along with the more famous, Tab Benoit is one of my favorites.

Buddy Guy gets my vote although I have many that I love to listen to. I love the Blues. Ever seen the movie "Cadilac Records"?

I'm going to go outside of the box but I think it was Wes Montgomery. I know he was a jazz player but Wes could flat out play the BLUES!

honorable mention: Skip James, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush

I agree Mayer should not really be mentioned with the real greats.

Somebody you've probably never heard of, in a place you've probably never been too. The greatest blues guitarists don't play for money or record contracts, they're the ones that are telling their story, because they lived it and are still living it.

"Best" as in highest quality or standing? Which is different from "favorite" or most meaningful to me personally?

That has to be Robert Johnson, right?

Even Clapton stated that he was "the most important blues singer that ever lived", presumably meaning as a musician/guitarist as well.

Favorite, or most meaningful to me or any of you, might be different.

For instance, I know that Led Zeppelin is a more meaningful and important band than say, Van Halen, but VH is my favorite all-time band. They are more meaningful to me.

But I wouldn't say that VH was above Led Zeppelin on a "Best" list.

Likewise, I love Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Luther Alison, Clapton, SRV, Mayer etc., but if the guys on that list all say that Robert Johnson (Clapton), or T-Bone Walker (Hendrix), or Muddy Waters (Buddy Guy) were the "Best", doesn't that make them the "Best"?

I prefer Clapton's recording of "Crossroads", but it's Robert Johnson's song and Clapton has the benefit of contemporary equipment.

given this answer I would say Son House then, because most rumors I have heard say House mentored Johnson and provided him with a lot if not most of his material.

I think this is the answer right here. Spot on. The greatest blues artists play because they have the a bad case of the blues and need an outlet to keep them from going crazy.
