I was just wondering if anyone here has played around with the pick up distance from the strings and what were your results? I'm interested in opinions for both vintage style pick ups and the newer nosieless style.

My experience has been that pickup height adjustment can make a huge difference in sound. If too close to the strings it will affect your intonation so keep that it mind.

In some cases you can also adjust the pole pieces, but these are mostly on humbucking pickups.

Moving the pups closer to the strings will give you more volume, more distortion, and less sustain.

So is it best to keep them at the height Fender recommends from the factory?

Seems the Factory settings are the base.

They type of strings, diameter of strings, bridge hight, type of play, amplifier, electronics such as chords used, etc all effect the pickup delivery.

Experment from the base settings with your amp....know it may change if you change amps. A little adjustment goes a long way, so only make 1/4 turns.

Cleaner the better for me, so I've found a good height for my preference. I dropped my neck a lot, so that and my high action really takes away from volume, but I make up for it at the amp. I use the volume on the guitar for more dirt, with this I can play lightly and keep the clean, while on the other hand digging in hard for some good bite. That's why I love single coils. I've tried this with humbuckers and just can't seem to get the same results. I test drove a Les Paul a few years back when I thought I might be going through a transition, but this is what made my strat the champion.
