I played one at Guitar Center, and I honestly couldn't tell the difference between settings.

Maybe the battery was dead.

Of course, it was also incredibly loud, because I had to listen to some guy playing a Jackson through a Marshall as loud as he possibly could, so maybe I just couldn't hear it.

If you have the money and don't mind the 'novelty' of this guitar, it is a nice American Stratocaster in its own right with the addition of the VG tuning and pickup emulation. I not only liked the emulations but it sounds and plays like any quality Strat - so you get that extra feature.

Pros:
- Excellent, no-lag emulations. You get drop-D, G, D, Baritone, and 12-string tuning emulation. You get Stratocaster, Telecaster, Humbucker, Acoustic pickup emulations (these emulations also respond to the 5-selector switch).
- Quality American-made guitar.

Cons:
- Batteries. As long as the chord is plugged in, the VG system is active. This is whether or not you are in emulation. Fender recommends investment in 2500mah NimH rechargeable AA batteries for the best lifespan. Two sets of four interchanged works well. A suggestion to Fender for conserving battery life would be either to deactivate the system when not in emulation or include an on/off switch.
- Not everyone likes the emulations. I think the biggest complaint is the acoustic setting - but it is not easy to turn a solid-body electric guitar into an acoustic-electric guitar. This is more subjective.
- Minor: Pickguard. If you want to replace the pickguard, I don't think a standard Stratocaster one will work here since it has the two extra knobs for the VG system.

Forgive the newbie question... but the "acoustic pickup emulation" that you mention above has piqued my interest. Can I refit my strat for something like this? I love my strat, and I also love the acoustic sound... but don't have the room for a bunch of guitars. Anyone have any suggestions, other than buying an acoustic?

I saw a VG listed online, but it said it was Made in Mexico. Is this possible? Sounds like maybe its a fake or a typo in the ad. Can anyone confirm that ALL authentic VG's are made in the USA?

As far as I know, the VG system is a specially-designed system by Fender/Roland. Simply adding a Roland GK-2A MIDI pickup won't do the same thing - as the pickup transmits to a MIDI port out to a MIDI emulator (e.g.: GR-33). Seeing the big covered area on the back behind the bridge makes me think that there is specially-designed circuitry used to do the emulations and link in the 5-position selector switch. I haven't opened it up to see what's all in there but I suspect a circuit board with all sorts of wiring or flat cables.

I'd buy a decent acoustic-electric guitar - I have one. ;) You definitely can't get the same feel and sound from the Strat emulation - with the a-e you have the actual acoustic amplification added to the amplifier output.

i agree on the battery thong they should have thought of a rechargable system that is already in the vg. also the acoustic sounds arent that bad.

other than that its a really good guitar and im saving money for one!!!!! :D
