I have a new American strat that was set up at the factory with the 1/8th inch gap and my old MIM strat has the bridge flush to the body. Are there any advantages one way or the other?

It's all personal preference.

chets right on this one. I like to keep mine flush I used to have the 1/8 float but I use the trem so little that I just tighted it so I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore

Thanks for the replies. I dunno if I'm weird or something but I don't like seeing the bridge move when I make a big bend but I guess that it isn't hurting anything. 8)

screwed down has an effect on the tuning stability, that being said many believe it also takes away from the "Strat Sound" and dampening the vibrations may dull the sound a bit.

These are commonly held beliefs not scientific facts, your outcome may vary.

I dont use the whammy bar, however I use the tips of my fingers under the bridge for a slight waver in the pitch (sounds cool) and so I keep my Strats at Fender specs with the 1/8" gap.

I have never owned a Strat with severe tuning stability issues either.

Don't understand this observation. This trem system was designed to do exactly what you see it do on a fulcrum.

Mine is about 1/16th from the body. I keep 5 springs loaded so it stays in tune well but I can still tone dive from time to time.

I was wondering if you could do the 5 springs thing and still get a float on the bridge.

now that I would like to try on one of my strats, I just wonder if I can do the finger tip whammy with all five installed ?

Most early guitars were fitted with 5. I don't know exactly when the departure began. It's a strong pull.

When the trem floats, you can pull up on it and raise the pitch. If it's flush to the body, you can't. If it's properly set up, tuning isn't a problem until a string breaks. It all depends on your style of playing. The 1/8 th inch is what is recommended. It's not the bridge height, it's the proper clearance between the rear of the trem and the body.
