Hello everyone, I was just open to some suggestion on what kind of pickups I should mod my highway one 2007 strat h-s-s with. I'm not too fond of these loud, noisy, humming pickups as I play with lots of distortion. I wanted to mod all of my pickups to make it sound overall better :D
I like to play Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Black Sabbath, Ozzy with Randy Rhoads etc. So I'm looking for a real metal sound, some distortion friendly, hum-canceling pickups. When I play clean, I love a rich jazzy sound. Are there any pickups that are this versatile to mod my strat with?

Have you tried do a complete shielding job on the guitar and playing with pickup height?

I've played with the pickup height yes, but I haven't done a shielding job. I'm really looking for a better tone and these pickups don't give me that tone I'm really after.

All stock hardware? Have you replaced the block, saddles and bridge plate with high performance components from Callaham Guitars?

If you play with alot of distortion - and want noiseless, you should probably go with an active pickup.
Check out EMG 81 or 85 for the bridge, and either noiseless, or EMG single-coils for the mid, neck positions.

Thanks, my dad uses those EMG pickups... I'll give it some time before I decide. I may go with a nice Seymour Duncan in the bridge and 2 fender vintage noiseless in the neck and middle...

I have a 72' RI that I put a set of EMG-SA active pups in, and I love them. They get a hotter-than-stock Strat tone with no noise at ALL! I think EMG makes a great product. They are a little pricey, but you get what you pay for.

I was just re-reading an article about Dave Gilmour where he's talking about all the years he used passive EMGs for a basically Straty sound but without hum under the very difficult playing conditions of a huge and (in the old days) badly shielded lighting rig.

So if you didn't want to go the active route, passive EMGs may still be a good option.

Also, I have a set of silver, red and blue Lace Sensors on one of my Strats and I really love them. The minute Clapton stopped using Lace they immediately became less fashionable, but I'd suggest they have a lot going for them. Creamy smooth and with enough output for higher gain work, if that's what you want; but they still clean up very well indeed. I spend a lot of time chasing a jazzy sound on the neck pickup with the tone rolled well off: the Sensors are excellent for that.
