Hello,

I'm rather new to the guitar world as I've only been playing for about 6 months. I just last week bought a Blues Jr. III and am going to be buying my first Strat in the next couple of weeks. A friend of mine has a SRV signature Strat with the Texas Special pickups in it and i really like the tone of them but I have had my eye on the new American Standard Strat with the custom shop Fat 50's in it. My question is, is there a significant difference in these two pickups and if so which one is going to give me the most classic fender blues tone.

Thanks for the help.

Dave

Simple answer - the new American Standard Strat with the custom shop Fat 50's in it. Better Blues/Classic Strat tones all around.

Half of the rock and roll "equation" is the amp.

Good pickups always sound their best through a great rig.

I cannot say which you'd prefer; however, if you want to know the American Special has Texas Special and the American Standard has the Fat 50's. I am sure the guitar store you bought your amp at would have another Blues JR III. Play both and see which you like better.

My personal opinion is the Fat 50's have more beef. Not as shrilly as the Texas Specials. I prefer the Fat 50's.

Pick ups are important, but I own a '79 Strat (ash body (no finish), rosewood fret board neck and Van Zandt "True Vintage" pickups and I get amazing SRV sounds. This guitar is great for blues.

My point? If you were get a good road worn '60s Strat and a good Fender amp you'll get a similar sound. More than anything else though you need to learn that a lot of SRV's and all the greats sound came mainly from their finger tips (how they struck the strings, how they used vibrato, they way they do bends and their phrasing).

I can't speak about the Texas Specials but I love the Fat 50s. Just real sweet clear pickups.

+1

Technique is much more esoteric than which guitar or amp to buy but it's of paramount importance nonetheless. Get the best gear you can afford then practice practice practice until your chops become second nature.

Rawk on!

Thanks all,

I know i will never sound like SRV because I'm not him. I do love his style of blues and hope to be able to achive they same kinda vibe aswell as become a well rounded guitarist. Learning guitar has brought alot of enjoyment to me and that is the most important thing for me.
