Hey everybody, how do you get good soinding distortion on a strat (amp settings, big muff settings etc) i have an american deluxe ash strat (2012 SSS) and i AM DEFINITELY not considering changing the pickups. Running through a vox ac100 head and a bogner 2x12 alchemish cab... it either sounds too trebely or too bassy..... im looking for like a gilmour type crunch... pretty much a humbucker sound... all input is appreciated thank you

Asked and answered, Your Honor......

Defense counsel bought the wrong guitar.

I don't consider "Gilmour type crunch" to be a "humbucker sound".

Of course it depends on what era Gilmour you're talking about - if you're talking about say "Echos" from "Meddle" then a Big Muff should get you there. Really he primarily used fairly stock Strat pickups up until "Animals"; at that point he put in a DiMarzio hot Strat bridge pickup; then about half-way through recording "The Wall" he changed that out to the Duncan that's in The Black Strat today. "Momentary Lapse" and "The Division Bell" are the EMG years.

But none of that is really a good solid humbucker crunch; it's single coils through effects to get where you're going. Of course it also helps to play really loud through a tube amp near to natural break-up levels then put it over the top with the effects.

If you're looking for settings for getting good distorted Gilmour sounds try http://www.gilmourish.com - it's the "bible" for what Gilmour used on various albums, cuts, and some tips on settings.

I was able to get some really nice Gilmour tones with my Clapton Strat (mid-range boost turned up high), a DS1 distortion pedal and my Peavey Delta Blues amp.

I also used a Hwy1 with the tone knobs turned down to about 4 or 5 in the 2 and 4 position.

Your tone knobs on your guitar can make a big difference.

I plug my Strat into my 59 5F6A Bassman clone that I built and turn the guitar up to "10" and the amp up to "12". I get plenty of fantastic overdrive and distortion. Of course, I can only stay in the room for about 10 minutes, but those are 10 GLORIOUS minutes.

This whole thing with the tone knobs came about when I moved away for a bit and didn't take me Clapton Strat with me. The only Strat I had was my Hwy1, but I still wanted that thick Clapton tone. I also found that by turning the tone down my distorted notes actually had a richer sound and with vibrato rang out longer. Kind of like a Big Muff.

Speaking of Big Muff. Using Clapton Strat and my Big Muff I was able to get a ringing notes that lasteed... well until I stopped it. After plucking the note I let it ring for about 30 or 40 seconds. Amazed by this I held the note and called my friend to have him take a listen. He listened for a bit (the same note). After I got off the phone I sat there holding this note that had been ringing for over a minute. I finally got board and stopped the note. I've never been able reproduce it since, but I keep trying.

Hi MikeRubin and welcome to the forum.

I am not too familiar with the Vox AC100 so I can't be much help there. What I would suggest is trying your ADStrat with all three pups in series: engage S1 Switch, set selector switch to Position 1, bridge. This will give you a darker, thicker sound.

HTH

Cheers!

i hope i understand your post. you are using a bigmuff to get distortion through a vox 100 head? just thought i would throw in a fact about british amps. they can have a problem with a "full frequency" booster or effect. if you read your music equipment history some of our favorite guitarists used vox, marshall or orange amps. all darker sounding as in low mid freqs are a bit more pronounced. the guitarists realised this when they played through a "full freq" booster/distortion the amps would get muddy so they used a treble type booster or some type that didn't boost all freqs. just try to set the amp just at breakup and set your boost/dist a bit on the treble side.play around with the distortion on the pedal. start low and add more to taste. by running the amp at full overdrive you will bring out more bass freqs. let the amps normal freqs come through. thats why you should just barely get it to breakup if you hit the notes hard. let the pedal push it on to full O.D. . control volume/overdrive with the guitar.

hey everybody thanks for all of the input. i have realized that after being a gibson player for many years now ive been approaching this all wrong. with my sg i can just flip to the bridge pup and turn up the gain and im good. i now know that the bridge pup on a strat cannot handle distortion whatsoever. so neck pickup with the tone knob on 5 and im golden. either that or the neck/middle or middle/bridge in series with the s1 switch.

Well, here's an alternative setting you could try... Position 4 with the tone rolled all the way off (trust me) and into an overdriven decent valve amp. I have a Custom Deluxe Strat with Master Design Pickups (which I believe are a bit like Texas Specials but slightly hotter) and a Blackstar HT60 Stage - on the first overdrive channel with the gain about half way, this sounds great and is a tone I use a lot. For extra spice, add a touch of chorus. Special :-)

It's a really surprising tone: not at all bassy or muffled, like you might expect. It's sort of a Strat variation on Clapton's Cream era 'woman tone'.

@John C

Don't forget the shortlived SHSS pickup mod David did in 1973.
