I recently bought a texas special pickup set to up grade my mim strat, when trying to screw it onto the pickguard the screws refused to go in, upon inspection i realised none of the three pickups had threading, my mind told me to stop, but being harden i used a tap to cut the threads that it should have come with. I installed according to the wiring diagram sent with the pickup and the middle selector which is for the middle pickup, no sound, one and five on switch working for neck and bridge, to do a kind of elemination process i switched the wires on the five way switch which were neck and middle, now the middle position on the five way switch works which is now hooked up to the neck pickup , but in 5th position on the 5 way switch that the middle is hooked up to is still has no sound.
Did i get a defective middle pickup ?

Either that or you may have damaged its coil upon installation.

take close look at it, if you've got a loose "small copper" wire floating around where the wire wraps around the pickup base, there's your problem. very easy to break that hair thin wire that wraps around the magnets. you can get them rewound tho.. however it's not covered under any warranty afaik.

I had a rough time getting the self-tapping screws into my Fat 50s pickups too. I forget who but one other pickup maker I was reading about stated that the holes were threaded already in his, so we probably aren't the first to have this problem.

You can check if a pickup is broken with a multimeter. Just touch the probes to the pickup leads, and it should read somewhere around 5-25 kiloohms. If it's infinity or zero you know something's up.
