I am looking to get a new guitar. I already have an American Strat, so what would you suggest on picking up next?

I recommend going to several music stores and playing all the guitars in your price range. Find the one YOU like best.

Grab a gibson if you're into rock, a Jackson if you're going for metal.

My personal opinion is to skip the Les Paul Studio and go for a Les Paul Standard.
I have owned a Les Paul Studio and was not that good of a guitar.

Best deal going today and a whole new range of tones would be a Fender MIM Tele.

Really ya gotta give one a try, they are great and such a deal !!!

My only beef with Fender about the Made in Mexico stuff is the lack of color choices.

I tried a Les Paul, a Flying V and an SG and sold them all after a couple of months, when you get used to a Fender its really hard to like the other stuff, at least for me.

To get a variety in sound, I'd suggest trying something with humbuckers like an SG or LP. Or even go a little further and buy a semi-hollow with humbuckers.

My main axe was an LP Deluxe (mini-humbuckers). I was torn between getting a Strat and getting an Epiphone archtop. At the advise of a friend, I got the Strat for the sake of having more variety in sound options. Best choice ever.

Between the LP Deluxe and the Strat life is good.

I have to agree, but to be a bit more specific, get a Telecaster for blues, a Gibson Les Paul for Rock, and a Jackson Rhoads or Kelly, or a Gibson Explorer for Metal. BUY A MARSHALL!!!!!!!

Since you have an American Standard. You might look at an HSS - the humbucker will provide you sound you won't hear on your standard.
