I've got a '99 American Deluxe Strat that I bought new. I love everything about it except one big thing. I've never liked the Vintage Noiseless pickups that it came with. IMHO they SUCK! They just don't have the tone I want no matter what amp I play through or how I tweak the settings on the guitar or amp. They have no "sparkle" to them. I've also got a '00 Tele American Standard that I recently installed a four way switch to get the extra tone with both pickups in series. I love it. It's now my favorite setting.
So this got me into my "Hot Rod Mod" mode and I started researching what I could do to change my Strat into a real tone monster. I've now narrowed it down to two mods. The first is from Kinman (which I've heard a lot of good things about on this and other forums). Namely their Woodstock Plus setup with their K9 harness to give me nine tones instead of five, one of which is a series connection between the neck and middle pickups. They use a blender push-pull pot insted of the second tone control to bring in the neck pickup. With the knob out it puts the neck in series. On the other hand, Rothstein Guitars has what they call their "Ultimate Strat Voodoo" kit. Same nine tones except they use a "Neck On" push-pull to bring in the neck pick up in parallel and a "Blow Switch" to hook up the neck and bridge pickups in series. The blow switch over rides everything else. They also replace the second tone pot with a master midrange control. The Rothstein mod is just a wiring kit so I can use any pickup set that I choose.
