You glean a different 'feel' from the artists you mention. Knopfler shares the stage equally with them and if 'he has never really done anything' for you as you admit, it is unlikely that I could persuade you to 'feel' otherwise.

It may be due to the strong 'blues' based genre that your favorites share. Knopfler is not in that groove. His early stuff is very strongly rock oriented but many compositions are more orchestral in nature. He moves into folk, and country, a strong Scotch-Irish influence in a great deal of his work.

He paints electronically with the skill of Hendricks and Van Halen to a more elegant and complex degree than either Clapton or Vaughn and there is little in the catalog of either of the latter which can soften my mood and ease my mind as well as Knopfler.

Knopflers finger work is amazing. He belongs on any list of Stratocaster Greatness. Even Fender thinks so.

Doc, if you ever write an article on Hendricks and Vaughn, remember, it's Hendrix and Vaughan.

I stand corrected....by the hour that was posted I had already 20 hours under my belt for the day. Tend to get a bit bleary-eyed. For someone who owns a considerable collection of their music and has been to EMP in Seattle numerous times you would think I could spell it correctly in my sleep. Apparently that is not true.

I couldn't agree more with the OP. MK was the one who got me started into listening music and into playing guitar.

Now, 15 years later, I am still impressed by his technique, his use of dynamics and by his songwriting. And as the Doc said (whoever that mysterious figure is):

Quote:
One must really listen to the total of his work product to appreciated the length and breath of his musical range in terms of styles and song forms.
I find his current compositions most creative and varied with respect to lyric, melody, arrangement and orchestration, etc. His knowledge base with respect to cultural themes is most impressivie. He writes about Imelda Marcos, the racing circuit in the US, commerccial fishermen, just to name a few. That elusive in=between sound of early Dire Straits...that was just the tip of the iceberg. If you haven't plumbed the rest of it...you must!!

I love his approach to songwriting as well, the way he chooses the topics (you forgot to mention a neglected jazz band in a nondescript pub in London) and how he writes obliquely about them. Often it's takne me some time to find out what a song was really about.

Keep on playin'!

On the "BBC" CD Knopfler introduces "the single" with the commentary that it is a song about a jazz band "The Sultans of Swing".
