You know it's not how many notes you can play; or how fast that counts; IMHO it's your expression; what your "saying" and Mark is a master at it; most definatly!

Just listening to some of his music. What an unassuming master of the stratocaster. In my humble opinion he coaxes out the most beautiful sounds of that instrument. Dont want to start a debate about who is the best, Just wanted to see if I could get an Amen from the flock.

Some of my favorite work by him:

I and I: Dylan's Infedels
In the Gallery
If This is Goodbye
Brothers in Arms
Six Blade Knife

One must really listen to the total of his work product to appreciated the length and breath of his musical range in terms of styles and song forms.
I find his current compositions most creative and varied with respect to lyric, melody, arrangement and orchestration, etc. His knowledge base with respect to cultural themes is most impressivie. He writes about Imelda Marcos, the racing circuit in the US, commerccial fishermen, just to name a few. That elusive in=between sound of early Dire Straits...that was just the tip of the iceberg. If you haven't plumbed the rest of it...you must!!

....and how about that Paul Franklin on pedal steel !!!! What an awesome choice of sideman.

Knopfler deserves much more celebrity than he seems to enjoy, even though it is considerable.

Doc.

Mark Knopfler is one of my all time favorite guitarists. The following are my favorite MK tracks:

Communique
Lady Writer
Once Upon A Time In The West
So Far Away
Money For Nothing
Walk Of Life
Your Latest Trick
Why Worry
Brothers In Arms
Sultans Of Swing
Wild West End

His playing on all of those songs is phenominal and they are all the epitome of the Stratocaster sound.

Come forward to the more recent recordings. There is so much diversity there, and wonderful guitar.

Knopfler's amazing. Love his tone and I've gotten fairly close to it.

The Knopfler tone: in the last few years I've seen him in a tiny club playing Strats through a Fender Vibrolux; in a stadium playing Strats and Les Pauls through Orange half-stacks; and in a medium sized hall playing a Schecter straight through the PA.

And each time he sounded like... Mark Knopfler. A little object lesson for those of us that think getting a particular piece of kit is going to help us sound like a certain player. The sad truth: it's all in the fingers.

Knopfler's are pretty good...

There's no arguing your premise...however....if you listen carefully to his tonal palate across the wide range of music he has produced there's a great deal of signal processed coloration in his orchestrations. Listening this morning to a track on "Down Every Street" I was hard pressed to distinguish between the sax lines and the guitar lines, the tonal coloration being that clever and, knowing Knopfler, it was intended to be that way.

Thanks for your vote of confidence. I simply want to direct your enthusiasm beyond 'Dire Straits" with respect to this artist, because THAT band enjoyed the participation of members all, creative and accomplished musicians who produced a diverse catalog of compositions. A careful listening of all of their work supports this.

Beyond that band, Knopfler goes on to a wide range of new work product including composing for film..."The Princess Bride" score. being an example.

I also recommend to you his duo recording with the great Chet Atkins whom I have no doubt was an inspiration and role model for Knop[ler's finger style. The CD is entitled "Neck and Neck" and it ought to be included in your music collection.

As an aside, but related, if you collect Jeff Beck, then you should own a recording entitled "Crazy Legs". It is Beck's tribute to his rockabilly roots and inspiration...guitarist Cliff Gallup who was an early member of the band Gene Vincent headed in the '50's. The details that Beck sought for authenticity in the production of that recording are legion and have been documented in an issue of 'Guitar Player" magazine. If you are interested, I will endeavor to retrieve the issue # for you.

"You're no Mark Knopfler", says Chet Atkins to Mark Knopfler in There'll be Some Changes Made. Atkins and Knopfler together on one album. Too good to miss: I've owned that one since the day it came out!

All thoughts and information hungrily received, thank you. Especially regarding Sir Geoffrey of Beck...

I have been listening to his effort with Emmylou Harris for the past several weeks. I love it. They sound great together. Gotta love the last track, If This is Love. Not only a great player, but also a great song writer.

Sorry... it must be me... he has never really done anything for me... if we are going to compare him to the likes of JMH, Clapton, Vaughn, et. al.

The Jeff Beck article of which I wrote appears in a rather ancient issue of Guitar Player.....
....April 1993
