The string guide for the fourth string is bent the most significantly with a small hairline crack. My buddy who helped me set it up owns a Jay Turser strat knock-off. He jammed with this strat a bit after installing the strings and felt that his Turser played better than the strat. I wish I could put it into better context than that, but I am a complete novice. I do intend to learn and some day shred on this beauty, though! I am considering taking it to a shop to have it properly setup and potentially have the nut changed, but I wouldn't know what the heck to ask for.

What you have is a fender contemporary stratocaster with a system II bridge. There was only one model made with that bridge. I have one too, just bought it a few weeks ago. Keep it and dont change it. It will only go up in value, how much did you pay for it? Oh and it apears the nut has been changed. If it was mine I'd put a floyd rose nut on it because there was a time when fender hired floyd to make replacement parts for those guitars and if you put a floyd nut on it will be close to original. I didn't notice, do you have the whammy bar for it? Those are almost impossible to find. Anyways if you search fender system II tremolo you'll find the original manual and lots of other info for that guitar. I love it if you want to sell it let me know.

Keep strummin!

Dan

Rob - thanks as always for the glimpse inside Fender. That must have been quite an unusual time for the company and all the employees.

I'll be completely honest with you - I never did spend much time at all with either the Standards or Elites from 1983/84 as their neck shape just didn't work at all for me so I never really tried out the FreeFlyte that much in person. I always thought the Elite concept was very cool - as you say it was a serious attempt to advance the instruments - but I couldn't get past the wide/thin neck shape.

Not to mention the MIJ Elites and Barebones from the aforementioned period which came with a 22-fret neck and 9.5" radius...
