So, Christmas is almost there and I plan to get enough budget for a new and better guitar. My idol is Mr. Gilmour, so I'd like to have a guitar that looks like the one he has. Black body, maple fretboard and white pickups and buttons.
So, I saw the Squier Vintage Modified 70's Strat in black and I liked it.
I'm planning to buy that guitar shortly after Christmas, if I get the enough budget.
Then I plan to get more money and mod the Squier with this: ww.stratcat.biz/4035.
That site was sent to me by a friend who did the same thing I'm planning to do. He said that he made a Fender, with a body of a Squier.
Is it a good idea to buy from that site? Or should I buy the pickups apart aswell the other acessories? Or should I save the money for a better guitar?

Well it depends on how closely you want your sound to match David's. If you buy the squier and do a good job modifying it, it will sound good. If you buy a fender with higher quality wood etc, youll sound even better. it depends on how much money you want to spend as well because as im sure you know, fenders are more expensive.... now if you REALLY want to go all out...

-buy a sunburst strat (alder body/ maple fretboard)
-paint it black
-rout the bridge as if you were going to fit a kahler tremolo
-fill it with wood
-rout out for a humbucker
-put seymour duncans in it
-rout out a hole on the bottom of the guitar (where a les paul input jack is)
-fill it
-install a shortened tremolo arm

then you will have a david gilmour edition fender custom shop..... hope that helps

For starters, hold out until your budget allows for at least, an outright Fender. In the long run, you'll be glad you did.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Log into http://www.siglermusiconline.com. Go to guitars>920D Stratocasters. Take a look at the line of budget priced mods they do. They're showing a 'Gilmour-style' Red Strat, White Strat 00001,and Black Strat at $750. You might also care to be content with an NOS version lacking all the bangs and dents and cost to arrive at same and, as Martian suggests, built on an MIM Standard.

The white Squier Classic Vibe '50's has the aura of Gilmour's famous 0001, as well as the white VRI which he acquired along with the red. Unfortunately it does not appear that Squier is offering that guitar in the red any longer otherwise I would have suggested that guitar modded with an EMG SA active set and the appropriate pots.

Fender did produce an MIM 'snapshot' version of the Black Strat a couple of years ago. You might look around for one on the used market.

Well, isnt the Squier + the modifications sufficient? You know, I'm still a student and I only receive money in Christmas and Birthday, so it will take a long time, and I mean YEARS to get a proper Fender. And the guitar I'd like to have a guitar inspired in the Black Strat, of course.
Also, I'm from Europe, so I'd like to buy guitar/parts from Europe, due to the shipping fees.
Still, you didnt answer my question: Is that modification worth it?

Just do it ! You get a long way with the looks , anyway - and you have asked if you should save your money for a better guitar , and people here has told you to do that , but you will obviously not listen to that advice 8) I bet that guitar is a lot better than the one you've got , so go on.
It's not the real thing , but getting closer. And it's a decent guitar. You can modify later. Before that - see what you can get out of it . Play like Gilmour ! Buy a pedal !
About buying from USA - that isn't necessarily a bad idea , as the Fenders there are cheaper than in Europe. So if you add shipping costs , it does not need to be more expensive

Thanks for the good reply! I heard that the shipping costs are very expensive when buying from USA like 50 euros to Europe. Are you sure that it is worth it?

You're welcome :D
If it is worth it , is up to you to decide ! If you can get something really special or to a special price, I would say yes- of course ! You might check out shipping prices in different stores or even eBay . No problem checkinG out things like that on the www!
It is then up to YOU ! Have a good choice, and good luck ;-)

No matter what you do you will not sound like Gilmore because your not him so get the Squire and do you mods. There not bad guitars and as long as you are happy with it thats what matters.

Save your money and buy a better guitar.

Buying a guitar that sells for $250:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ ... tar/h78854

and them installing a loaded pickguard that costs $385

http://www.stratcat.biz/4035.shtml

is a ridiculous waste of money.

You haven't revealed to us what your $US budget amount is, but it seems to me that if you could find your way to saving $1000 US and be patient about it, the modded Fender Standard(Made in Mexico) available through Sigler should give you what you want. Then you'll have to start saving for the rest of 'the sound from heaven' by going to www.gilmourish.com and doing some research.

To me, replacing a Squier with a Squier is lateral rather than "better". If I'm interpreting your budget correctly, you'd probably do better with some sort of modeling amp in an attempt to clone Gilmour's tonality.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Well, I dont have any Squier. I have a poor, very poor guitar from a german brand called Rocktile. So that why I want a better guitar.

I think I have already answered that question.
