Hi Guys,

Ive been thinking about making the action a little bit higher on my strat, i prefer the feel of a high action. I have always followed Fender Spec but would like to tailor this to my needs...fender spec says 4/64ths..i would like to go to around 6/64ths...is this ok to do?? and would pup height need altering to suit or is that pure taste again?

Im also going back to 9 string gauge i much prefer this for my own style of play..im curently using 10's and prefer lighter strings.

Do some of you have high action?

Thx
Pete

You can put any action you want, there is no problem. Fender spec is an average for most ( ? ) people

You have to check it after put lighter string.

Don't forget your tremolo springs too.

I have both my Strats and my Tele set to 5/64ths across the neck. I tend to play quite hard (especially on the Tele - it's an animal!) and prefer the feel of a bit more 'meat' to get my fingers under when I'm bending strings.

I grew up believing that the Holy Grail was an ultra-low action and almost flat frets. Funny thing is, the older I get, the more I feel comfortable and happy with higher action and taller frets: Medium Jumbos on my Tele and 6105s on my CS Strat suit me just fine these days :-)

I think the thing is, if your playing style and preference says higher action, then do it. It doesn't matter what anyone else says or thinks: it's what you feel best with, isn't it?

My thoughts exactly :) yeah i like the feel of more meat to the fingers from the strings..i can relate to you i used to have my action ultra low as i thought it was the thing to do lol but that was in my metal days..im strictly blues now..and know i would prefer a higher action..just feels right to me :) I will put mine at 5/64ths and see how it feels :) Thanks man!

Truss rod adjustment is about neck relief ( ) a switch from 10's to 9's is a minor switch and should not require any truss rod adjustment.
You will need to possibly adjust ( equalize ) your string to springs tension if you are floating the trem....
However your questions tell us that you should have a tech adjust and set up your guitar, show you how to do so.

If you had the pickups where you liked them for your previous string height, then of course you will have to adjust them again to maintain the same or a different relationship between the pickups and strings.

Add in the question about pickup height and +1.
