I just bougbht a used Strat and installed a new Graph Tech nut (very nice piece), tweaked some of the settings and it seems to play OK. I have a story about it with photos and a video at the link below. I am thinking about changing out the tremolo and wondered if anyone had any ideas about aftrermarket pieces.

The only way to get perfect tuning stability is with a double-locking system such as a Floyd Rose. The next best, as far as tuning stability would be to use a two-point locking bridge, roller nut and locking tuners. The six-screw bridge has no true pivot points, so the best setup can only allow light tremolo use, and you will still have slight tuning issues, with all strings going slightly sharp or flat, depending on which way you push or pull the bar. Those users with great setups (as good as it can be) will compensate for the flat/sharp tuning by giving the bar a push or pull at the end of the trem use.

I have beenn looking at the Floyd Rose but am wary of the installation of the nut piece. the only instructions I can find so far just say that precise routing is needed at the body and nut, nothing about what is done.
Besides, i see that Richie Sambora uses the Floyd Rose so it can't be bad!

Yep, for artists that like to use/abuse the whammy, it's always a FR to stay in tune. Those that don't use a FR will go out of tune (Hendrix, Beck, etc). For Strats, I deck the bridge, trem-claw screws tight to prevent bridge movement at all, works great, and I use a FR when I want to use whammy. Since I don't use the whammy, and I like double-stop bends, I primarily use a Strat with decked bridge, and the Kramer doesn't get much use any more. Maybe better to get a guitar with a FR instead of trying to install one on an existing guitar.

I'm not big on using a tremolo but thought maybe if I had a good one I'd get used to it. I recently built a Les Paul (sort of) and it turned out great, from a Precision Guitars Kit http://www.geezerguitar.com/precigitkit.html I am thinkiing about building another of their kits, one with a flatter top maybe so I could put on a nice Bixby, or maybe the Floyd Rose.
