I used to own an MG100hdfx half stack and the distortion was excellent sounding...the clean channel however was so dry, shallow, and lifeless that it actually prompted me to trade the half stack for a Fender Hotrod deluxe....best decision of my music career. Tubes all the way!

Definitely go tube--it's worth the extra investment every time. I had a Line 6 POD for quite a while; pretty decent for recording but live, it was lousy.
The originator of this thread cited artists who were mainly Marshall users; a criminally overlooked amp that can give a Marshall vibe without desecrating the holy name of Leo Fender is the old silverface Quad Reverbs--4X12 speakers, great tones (Marshall and Fender can be found in there!), decent price, but a little hard to find.
Another Fender amp with Marshall-esque tones is the silverface Bassman 10 (with a master volume). It sounds much more "Leo" than "James", but it is awesome. This is the only amp I've ever sold that I later regretted...great, heavy tones, affordable, and durable as hades!

Before anyone attacks me for the "Silverface" vs "Blackface" debate; I love (and have owned) almost all of the different types of Fender Tube Amps produced through the years--tweed, brown face/tolex, blackface, silverface, etc. You can get good tones out of almost all of them. Blackface amps are unique and have their own "thing" going, but anyone who discounts the viability and quality of their Silverfaced brethren is concerned more about collectability than sound. The Silverfaces sound great as well!

One other amp that everyone has skipped over in this thread is the old Bassman piggyback--remember, that's what James Marshall based his original amp on.

Good Vibes To Y'all!

62RI Stratocaster w/Vintage Vibe SP90 pickups
95 MIM Telecaster w/Mighty Mite P90 in neck position
80 G&L F-100
1963RI Fender Vibroverb Amp (brown tolex w/2X10 speakers)

A small valve amp. I'm running a Blackheart Little Giant, which is a great little amp. Its a 5 watt class A tube amp, with a triode/pentode switch to flip between 3 and 5 watts. Also has a 3 band EQ. I run it through a Marshall 1912 cab (their smallest cab, a single 12" speaker), and IMO it sounds AMAZING, british voiced I think people would call it. Nice cleans, natural breakup at a reasonable level, just .. lovely.

I'm also in love with the Peavey classic 30. I've played around with one in a shop a few times and it sounds just wonderful with a strat.

Then again, if I had the disposable income I think I'd upgrade to a blues junior in tweed..
