I agree with the last post and as for pedals the Big Muff would be an easy pedal to cover most of your bases. David Gilmore uses one and so does alot of grunge bands so it may be a good fit for you. Most stores will let you try them out before you buy them as long as you are not some mall rat trying to draw attention to yourself.

also forgot to mention a Fender hot rod deluxe (tube anp) and a big muff would both be within your budget. But then again I may be biased since that is what I play thru.

sorry foshastajones the champion 600 is not solid state, it is in fact a tube amp.

I didnt say outsourcing was a bad economic plan, however I still want my Fender gear to say Made in the U.S.A.

I grew up in an America you could and were proud of, sorry that isnt in style now.

what a shame !!!

The Champion 600 is a 5 watt tube amp. It has a 12ax7 pre-amp tube and a 6v6 power amp tube. I must have got a good one because my sounds great for its purpose...low watts at home. I even run a Line 6 XT Live through it and am very pleased with the results.

For practicing I would use a Fender Frontman 25 through a BOSS VH1 Wah Pedal. For a bluesy tone, turn your gain down to about 3, treble 6, middle 10 and bass 4. Metal tone, just have your gain full up man!!!!!!!!!
I would also reccomend a BOSS OS2 Overdrive/Distortion pedal. The VH1 pedal is about $200 and the OS2 is about $60. Or you can get it all together in a BOSS ME-50 multi-effects pedal because you get loads of effects in that all together and it will save you going out and buying a load of different effects pedals costing you a fortune! The ME-50 is about $300-$400. The Fender Frontman 25 is about $350, but it is a very good amp and is well worth the money. A larger wattage will require you to stretch your wallet a bit, or you might consider a Marshall where the amp comes with effects like Reverb, Delay and maybe a Flanger. Just go to a music store and try everything until you find something you like! You can do pretty much anything with a Strat through any amps and effects. Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for. :D

Oh man, oops. I think I was thinking about the Champion 300. Oops. But yeah, the Champion 600 is tube. Thank for the correction. I think I was playing the Fender Forum Drinking game when I wrote that post.

This will be long, but hopefully helpful.

Before you start worrying about this model amp versus that one you need to make a fundamental decision: do you want to get your basic amp sounds from a simulator, like a Pod or Boss GT-10, etc; or from the inherent quality of a good amplifier?

If the former, then you get a vast range of pretty good quality sounds from a box costing under $400 with more effects than you will ever need thrown in. Then all you need is a tranny amp with a decent clean sound to play it through. If it's just for home use don't be silly and get a huge 100w multi-channel amp; any 15 or 30w practice amp by Marshall, Fender or whoever will do you just fine. Actually, the best possible sound for sims comes from putting them through a hi-fi amp and speakers, since that system will add the least extra coloration to the amp sims. At home, just plug in to your hi-fi and get playing! For live, DI to the PA and listen to yourself through the monitor system.

On the other hand, if you want the playing experience of a real guitar amp then you are at the beginning of a long, expensive and fantastic road with no end. Forget Line 6/ Boss -type sims, begin collecting quality pedals, and put them in front of the finest amp you can afford.

Real tubes behave in a way digital has never yet learnt to emulate, which is why guitar amps are almost the only things left that still use them. You get compression and clipping and altogether an organic playing experience unlike anything else. I have a Marshall TSL. I've also purchased Marshall MG and Valvestate amps for practice. They are absolutely fine, but getting back to the TSL is like plugging into Concord at the moment of take-off: there's just nothing like it.

If you are going for tubes you must audition as many as you can because it is all about feel. Speakers and cabs make a huge difference too. If money is an issue don't forget to check out the Orange Tiny Terror: for $500 that's a whole lot of pure tube sound in a miniature package that is ideal for home or small gigs. A beautiful fundamental tone, which you can modify with your pedals. You'll need a cab too, of course.

And don't forget, any tube amp is going to need regular maintenance which will cost, especially if you don't know how to do biasing and such yourself. Start saving the pennies!

Just curious as to why no one has suggested a Fender Blues Jr.? I know it's a pretty simple tube amp, but the sounds that come out of it are amazing.

Man, that Mesa is the biz. But somewhere around the top of this thread the gentleman said he had about $600 to spend. I guess he could buy the knobs and tubes for that Boogie, and then start saving up for the rest...

Or may I recommend a Marshall Vintage Modern?

However, the Fender Blues Junior the previous guy suggested would be an ideal first tube amp. Simple is good: gain, bass, middle, treble and volume, plus verb. What else do you need? You'll think you just arrived in heaven.

Drift71, your search is over.

Get a Blues Junior. It's an all tube signal path. There's a solid state rectifier and the reverb has some solid state stuff, to keep the price reasonable. The cleans are awesome. The overdrive is good with the fat switch in and volume up above 11. The Fender Reverb adds a whole different dimension to your clean sound taking you into surf or turned down some but still pronounced creating just some awesome and beautiful tone. I'm playing a Highway One with Texas Specials and up in neck or neck mid I get some real sweet like blossoming tone when playing the gentle d minor arpeggio riff Christian stuff - and great quack with a little more bite at bridge-mid. Bridge is good with a real vintage sound for like surf or a change of pace in Blues tone. Mine's bone stock and it is really great with the Texas Highway.
